TIPPING OFF
The Knights came back from their Hawaiian road trip and put on another offensive show against Bay Bridge rival Holy Names, outshooting and outrebounding the Hawks, but falling in overtime. It was the Knights second game in a row with over 80 points and their fourth such game this season.
Alex Carmon led the way with a game-high 24 points, while
Rodrigo Maza just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
EIGHT IS ENOUGH FOR HILO
The Vulcans were the only team that the Urban Knights did not face on their trip through the islands, and since winning in overtime against Tiffin University back on November 26th, Hilo has dropped eight straight, including an overtime loss to Dixie State and a close game against Dominican. Hilo has a balanced attack on the year, with Darnell Williams averaging 12.2 points to lead a trio of players in double figures. Derek Owens (9.2 ppg) is almost at that plateau as well, while Brandon Thomas leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game.
CARMON CLIMBING THE CHARTS
With his 24 points against Holy Names, redshirt sophomore
Alex Carmon leapfrogged his way up the all-time scoring rankings for the Urban Knights. He started the night in sixth place overall with 608 points, but overtook big man Hunter Hayden (612), swingman Ivan "B.J." Prema, Jr. (624), and current assistant coach Phillip Samuel (626) by the end of overtime. Carmon has a chance to move even further up the line, but would have to average almost 20 points per contest over the final 12 games to get close to William Overton, Jr. (827) and all-time leader and graduate assistant
Ameer Shamsud-din (876).
THREE STRAIGHT FOR SILVERSWORDS
Lee Bailey has been leading the Swords so far this season, and did just that when the Urban Knights faced Chaminade last week, totaling a game-high 27 points in the 94-80 defeat of ART U. Bailey is one of four Swords averaging in double digits at 16.4 ppg, although one of those four is Christopher Varidel, who has only played in five games but is already fourth on the team with 106 total points (21.2 ppg). Kuany Kuany had 12 rebounds in the last game against the Urban Knights and just passed 100 rebounds on the season, averaging 7.2 points per contest.
MOORE TO LOVE FROM BEYOND THE ARC
Alexis Moore stepped into a big role for the Knights when he transferred in, and just like his high school backcourt-mate
Alex Carmon, he is moving up an all-time list, this time the single-season chart for three-pointers made. Moore was 3-of-5 beyond the three-point line against Holy Names, which put him at 40 triples for the season. That number ranks fifth in the all-time best seasons in ART U history, and Moore is right on the heels of Overton's 2010-11 season (42),
Ameer Shamsud-din's 2012-13 year (44), and Weleh Dennis in the inaugural season (45). Shamsud-din's debut year with the Knights is the best in history, when he made 55 three-pointers.
BYU-HAWAII COMES IN ON LOSING STREAK
The Seasiders have dropped a pair of games, falling to Point Loma back on January 10th by only three points, and then in a barn-burner against Chaminade, an overtime loss again by three points, as they fell 105-102. In the last meeting, it was Pablo Coro who led the way for BYUH with 19 points, helped along by making 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, in a game where the Knights almost doubled their output from the first half to the second half. Moore led the Knights with 19 points and eight rebounds in the loss.
IN TRANSITION
After playing three games in six days, ART U hits the road to take on Dixie State in Utah on January 30th before heading south to San Diego to face Point Loma Nazarene on February 1st. Their next home game will be Saturday, February 8th, against Notre Dame de Namur.Â
