SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Trading shots all night long, #3 seed Academy of Art men's basketball and #2 seed Biola saw their Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament Semifinal contest reach the final second to determine a winner, and it was the Urban Knights who came out with the triumph after a junior forward
Bryce Moore buzzer-beater from 30 feet out.
"Really proud of how our team battled to the end tonight," said ART U Heach Coach Scott Waterman. "We have been in so many close games this year and we have learned how to win. Credit to Biola as they played a heck of a game, but we made the big plays when we had to for the win. On to the championship tomorrow, I know our guys will be ready."
An opening frame that was neck-and-neck, ART U (19-11) snuck out with a halftime lead after a senior guard Rodney Munson 3-pointer that separated the score to 32-28. The Eagles were the ones to get ahead first, as they started the game on a 7-0 run, but the Knights finally tracked them down with under two minutes to go off a senior forward Isaiah Williams layup. Up four headed into the locker rooms, ART U looked to maintain that lead throughout the second half.
Senior forward Quintin Metcalf started the action in the closing frame with a lay up to put the Knights up six, but Biola regained a one-point advantage with 14 minutes to go. Seven more lead changes would come between the teams down the stretch of the contest, and Biola built a lead up to as many as seven points,
but once again the Knights battled back to put the game within one possession for the final touch.
As the Eagles' Casey Cappo put Biola up by two with six seconds to go, it was Bryce Moore who got the opportunity to sink the game-winner at the sound of the buzzer, and the 3-pointer from the junior put the Knights up one with no time left on the clock.
Redshirt junior guard Donovan Vickers and Williams put up 17 points apiece in the contest, with Munson adding on 12 plus four assists to match Donovan's total. Williams added three blocks and two steals while Munson's team-high nine rebounds were also the most in his career. Four Biola starters did all they could for their Eagles (22-7), but double-digit points for each of them would end up as not enough for the PacWest Semifinal victory.
The Knights will be back in the action tomorrow for the PacWest Championship Game, tipping off at 4:30 against No. 12 Point Loma in what will be the teams' third meeting of the season.
