Wildcat Classic (Rounds 1 & 2)
CORNING, Calif. – Off to a flying start at the Wildcat Classic is Academy of Art men's golf senior
Giulio Zanichelli, as his score after the first two rounds of 9-under-par 135 not only leads the Urban Knights, but leads the tournament overall. As a unit, ART U is tied for fifth place at a combined 2-over-par 290.
Improving by 10 strokes in the second round were the Knights, as their combined team score tied their season best. After ranking in second place with a 4-under-par 68 by the end of the first round, Zanichelli managed to improve by a stroke as he shot a 5-under-par 67 in the second play through. The Parma, Italy native saw nine birdies drop on the day, as well as two eagles, both on the third hole. Going into the final round, he leads Travis Miller of Chico State and Easton Hether of Cal State East Bay by just a stroke.
Lurking in on the top 10 players of the tournament is freshman Mario Stump as he ranks 12th by day's end after he put together a 1-under-par 143 through the first two rounds. Stump's 2-under-par 70 in the second run is now his best collegiate individual round through his first three tournaments. Not far behind is senior Anson Pan, as he holds a 2-over-par 146 in 24th place, while freshman Ekam Singh rounds out the team score with his 10-over-par 154, improving in the second round by six strokes. Next up on the squad is freshman Kok Siew "Andy" Chew, as he sits a stroke behind Singh with a 11-over-par 155, bettering his total in round two by seven swings.
While Zanichelli leads individually, it's CSUEB that leads the field as a team with their 23-under-par 265, ahead of second place Chico State by nine strokes.
The final round of the Wildcat Classic will commence tomorrow, as the field will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
