Competing on the national stage at the ITA Cup after qualifying by winning the ITA West Regional as the individual champion, sophomore
Amelija Supulniece took on a trio of opponents spread out between Oct. 10 - Oct. 13. Simultaneously out on the West Coast, the rest of the Urban Knights hosted Stanislaus, Dominican, and Santa Clara for their ART U Invitational held at The Club at Livermore.
ROME, Ga. – Supulniece entered the ITA Cup with her first match being played in the East Draw Stage. The native of Riga, Latvia was paired up with Amaia Balaguer Brau of Slippery Rock, who would eventually take the first-round battle with a 6-1, 6-2 score on Oct. 10.
Supulniece then moved on to the West Draw Stage on Oct. 11, as she entered the Quarterfinal match set up to compete with Anamarija Kovacevic of Findlay. Although making Kovacevic earn the first set by keeping it competitive, Supulniece's opponent would move on to the next round after triumphing with a 6-4, 6-1 score.
The Interaction & UI/UX Design major saw her last battle come on Oct. 12, as she geared up to compete against Selina Wu of St. Mary's (Tex.) in the South Draw Stage. Wu would be the one to move on to the South Final, as she took the match after a 6-3, 6-4 final.
LIVERMORE, Calif. – The first day of the ART U Invitational took place on Oct. 11 and the Knights saw multiple victories come out of the doubles courts against Stanislaus State with another on the singles side against Dominican.
In doubles, ART U took wins in both matches they competed in, as freshman Evi Roobol and sophomore Georgiana Parr defeated Annabelle Mulick and Emma Yu of Stanislaus 7-5 while junior Sofia Pavlova and senior Paulina Alvarez defeated Alyssa Tay and Parker Orlando 6-1. In singles, Roobol took the first win for ART U of the weekend as she took down Gina Dudley of Dominican 6-0, 6-1.
On Oct. 12, the Knights split their four matches as they won two while making their opponents work for wins in the others. Earning victories for the squad on the second day of action were Alvarez and Parr, as they each took down their singles opponent from Stanislaus while Alvarez took it 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 over Alyssa Tay while Parr's finished as 2-6, 6-0, 11-9 against Emma Yu.
ART U saw the third and final day of their home invitational come with wins all around on Oct. 13, as the squad went 6-0 through four singles matches and two doubles. Starting with the latter, Supulniece was back in town to compete with Roobol, as they defeated Gina Dudley and Audrey Rafols of Dominican 7-5 while Alvarez and Parr took down Ana Rios and Logan Koitka 6-4.
In singles, all four Knights took victories over their NCAA Division I opponents while battling with Santa Clara. Supulniece won against Anna Rahman 6-3, 6-4 while Roobol won her match with a 6-3, 6-1 final. Also taking wins in their tight matches, Alvarez defeated Jamie Pope 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 while Parr took hers 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 over Kacey Feng.
The Urban Knights will be back for their spring season after the ART U Invitational and ITA Cup concluded the fall season for the squad.
