VULCANS, SHARKS, SILVERSWORDS SAY ALOHA TO KNIGHTS OVER NEXT 12 GAMES
With a busy five games in three days as part of the Tournament of Champions, Academy of Art softball now turns its attention to the Urban Knights' longest roadtrip of the season, a 12-game stint in Hawaii taking on UH Hilo, Hawaii Pacific, and Chaminade in Pacific West Conference action.
FIRST PITCH
The first of three series takes place at UHH Softball Field in Hilo on Apr. 11-12 with both days beginning at noon HT (3 p.m. PT). Three days and one island hop later, ART U will take on HPU Apr. 15-16 from Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe on Oahu also at noon HT (3 p.m. PT) both afternoons. It will then be one day off before a pair of 1 p.m. HT (4 p.m. PT) starts to Apr. 18-19 doubleheaders against Chaminade once again at Howard A. Okita Field. Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights via the athletics app (

KNIGHT WATCH

Though her hitting streak ended at a team-best 12 games in Turlock, sophomore infielder
Haley Randall now finds herself inside the PacWest's top 10 with a .343 batting average, adding a team-best 19 runs scored. Emerging as a member of the Tournament of Champions All-Tournament Team, senior catcher/infielder
Lauryn Henderson is on the verge of ART U history, having tied the program's career home run record (22) with two blasts this past week. She is hitting .316 with three homers on the year (tied for seventh in PacWest), 10 doubles (tied for fifth in PacWest), and 17 runs batted in (10th in PacWest). She needs five more doubles to break the Academy of Art career record of 42 and her next RBI will make her just the third Urban Knight to reach triple digits in a career. With four more walks, the Game Development major will take the lead in that career category as well.
Going 5-for-12 (.417) with five RBIs, a homer, and two runs scored during ART U's recent four-game win streak, junior catcher/utility
Cassandra Mittman checks in at third on the squad both with a .273 batting average and four doubles as well as 11 RBIs. With Henderson inside the conference's top 20 in RBIs, sophomore pitcher/infielder
Katie Humphreys' 15 driven in are second on the team. Senior utility
Alyssa Rasmussen is one of just seven student-athletes in the PacWest with double-digit steals as her 11 swipes have her sixth in the conference while her two triples rank tied for sixth-most.
In the circle, sophomore pitcher
Jolene Rhoades (4-14) has dropped her earned run average to 5.82 with four outings allowing one run or less in 3.0+ innings. She is now tied with freshman pitcher
Julia Jordan (1-8) for the 11th -most strikeouts in the conference (42) while Rhoades' 98.2 innings pitched are eighth in the PacWest.
TO HILO WE GO
After going 3-3 to start PacWest play, UH Hilo rattled off six straight wins against Holy Names and Dominican, but then fell in 10 of its next 11 games with a 4-2 result against Azusa Pacific the lone victory. Like Academy of Art, the Vulcans also went 2-3 in the Tournament of Champions most recently. UH Hilo carries several student-athletes among the PacWest's top 10 including Jayda Favela (15 stolen bases are tied for second), Taisha Bratton (18 RBIs are ninth), and Alexis Lacy (1.96 ERA is eighth). A relatively even history between the two teams has the Vulcans up 15-13 on the Knights.
THE SHARKS' ATTACK

At 8-6 in conference action through Mar. 22, Hawaii Pacific experience an eight-game PacWest losing streak prior to the Tournament of Champions where the Sharks went 1-4. HPU is set to face Chaminade on Apr. 10 prior to hosting ART U. Two of Hawaii Pacific's top offensive producers have been Brandi Leong (15 stolen bases is tied for second in PacWest, .304 batting average is second on team) and Noel "Tita" Saunders (16 RBIs lead team, 10 steals are second, .301 batting average is third). Just two pitchers, Taylor Thompson (8-13) and Malia Torres (7-12) have taken the circle for the Sharks thus far and it is Thompson who leads with a 2.00 ERA (ninth in PacWest). Though Academy of Art defeated HPU
12-10 in its final game prior to the COVID-19 pandemic last time the teams clashed in 2020, Hawaii Pacific is up 22-14 all time.
CHAMINADE'S SQUAD
An early six-game win streak against PacWest opponents was more recently met with 12 consecutive losses prior to Chaminade going 2-3 in the Tournament of Champions. The Silverswords will meet Hawaii Pacific for the first time on Apr. 10 before welcoming Academy of Art. Just one Chaminade student-athlete, Taryn Fujioka (.313), is hitting over .300, but she has the second-most triples in the conference (4) and leads the team with six stolen bases. Dominant against the Silverswords since the teams first met in 2009, ART U leads the all-time series 23-8.
2-3 FINISH FOR ACADEMY OF ART AT TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
Late-inning drama spelled two victories for the Urban Knights on the first day of the Tournament of Champions as senior catcher/infielder
Lauryn Henderson's two-run homer in the eighth was the difference in an 11-9 triumph over Saint Martin's before seventh-inning run-scoring singles by junior outfielder
Bethany Mitchell and junior catcher/utility
Cassandra Mittman walked Academy of Art off as 3-2 winners over Cal State East Bay on
Apr. 1. Though subsequent losses came at the hands Simon Fraser, Western Oregon, and Western Washington to end ART U's four-game win streak, Henderson was named to the All-Tournament Team for her five-game stretch hitting .467 (7-for-15) with two home runs, four runs batted in, and six runs scored.
ON THE HORIZON
After Academy of Art returns from its roadtrip, six home games will close the regular season beginning with a Senior Day doubleheader rematch hosting Holy Names on Apr. 24.
