SAN FRANCISCO --Â Academy of Art women's tennis began its 2022 season with an exhibition match against NCAA Division I University of San Francisco on Wednesday afternoon at the Olympic Club.
"I think everybody was excited to start off the season," said Head Coach
Clarisse Baca. "We didn't get the result we wanted to accomplish, but the main message today was to see where we are in terms of competition and what we need to work on so when we play our first Division II opponent, we are even more ready."
After the Dons claimed both doubles contests by 6-2 scores, singles action was highlighted by freshman
Julia Ortega's third-set tiebreaker against Rita Colyer in the fifth position. Ortega had taken the opening set 6-4, but Colyer came back to force the decisive final frame with a 6-2 win in the second. Though Ortega had an opportunity for match point at 10-9, Colyer ended up a 12-10 winner.

"A big shoutout to Julia for battling through a super tiebreaker in the third set," Baca said. "Even though she wasn't able to convert, she is a clear example of grit and character."
Other singles action saw sophomore
Sofia Ragona battle Chiho Mushika to a pair of 6-4 defeats in the top slot and freshman
Maria Vittoria Casucci hanging with Mya Bui across a 6-2, 6-4 win for USF's side.
"It was exciting to see Mavi battle all the way through her match and start to figure things out," Baca said. "She had some opportunities to turn that match around."Â Â Â Â Â Â
