Dominican Invitational Full Results
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Participating as one of the three Northern California Bay Area schools in the Dominican Invitational over the weekend, Academy of Art women's tennis dominated the competition as the Urban Knights played to an 11-3 record combined in both singles and doubles action.
Matched up against fellow Bay Area schools and PacWest members Dominican and Holy Names, the Urban Knights lost a total of only six sets in the entire day, as they swept all three doubles matches that they played while also grabbing eight singles victories. Two Knights went 3-0 on the day, as both freshmen
Aitana Comas Adam and
Julia Ortega each 3-0 on the day, with each winning their singles battles before walking away victorious in their respective doubles contests.
Every match between the Penguins and the Knights were decided in straight sets, starting with sophomore
Yun "Nicole" Shiau on court two, as she rolled past Gina Dudley 6-4, 6-2. Following that was freshman
Erica Hellbe, needing a little extra time in the first set but still bouncing Zoe Coggins, 7-5, 6-3 on court three. Ortega earned her first win of the day on court four where she easily took down Haley Garcia, 6-2, 6-0. Comas Adam had a near identical score next door on court five against her opponent, as she picked up the last singles win over Dominican by dropping Gigi Alajeely 6-3, 6-0.
Moving into singles action against the Hawks, the momentum for ART U kept rolling when freshman
Maria Vittoria Casucci doubled up her opponent Deimante Bulatovaite in identical sets, 6-1, 6-1. Following suit with her first victory of the day was freshman
Paulina Alvarez, breezing past Alexandria Rogers on court six, 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, Ortega walked away with another easier win on court three by downing Ella Lavendar, 6-0, 6-2, and Comas Adam matched it when she topped Antionette Schreiber in identical sets from court four, 6-1, 6-1.
Snatching the first doubles win for ART U was the combination of Shiau and Hellbe, easily toppling the duo of Dudley and Audrey Rafols from Dominican, 6-2. Comas Adam would team with Vittoria Casucci for their doubles battle, as they defeated Dominican's Garcia and Coggins, 6-4. Facing off against Schreibner and Bulatovaite in the final doubles showdown, Ortega and Alvarez would barely be tested as they go one to win, 6-3.
The return to the court for ART U women's tennis will be soon, as the Urban Knights will participate in the UC Santa Cruz Slug Invite beginning on Oct. 30.
