PacWest Quarterfinals - No. 11 Academy of Art versus Concordia Final Results
Updated PacWest Championship Bracket
Â
SURPRISE, Ariz. – After receiving a bye in Tuesday's first round of the PacWest Championship, No. 11 Academy of Art took on Concordia in Wednesday morning's quarterfinal. The Urban Knights wasted no time in jumping ahead 2-1 in doubles and later sealed the deal with three unanswered points in singles to take the match 5-1.
Â
Both doubles wins for ART U were flawless in that they were both taken by a score of 8-0. In the first position, No. 14-ranked
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp were the first to finish and juniors
Monika Stanikova and
Paula Alcantara were second.
Â
Moving into singles, the Urban Knights were dominant once again, taking three matches to record the win. No. 41 K. Thell-Lenntorp pulled off an upset in the second position, defeating No. 10 Ghazal Pakbaten in straight sets (6-3, 6-4). Alcantara only conceded one game per set as she went on to defeat the Eagles' Kathrine Jensen by the decisive score of 6-1, 6-1. The Knights' final point came in fifth singles from A. Thell-Lenntorp. After sweeping the first set 6-0, her opponent fought back in the second, but the Lund, Sweden native ultimately took the set 6-3.
Â
With their quarterfinals win, ART U will now head to the semifinals where they will face No. 13 Azusa Pacific who they
defeated 6-3 earlier this season. This will be the first time that the two teams have faced each other in the semifinals and the Urban Knights hold a 3-0 record against the Cougars in the PacWest Championship.
Â
"We are thrilled to have advanced to the semifinals," said head coach
Clarisse Baca. "Our clincher today, K. Thell-Lenntorp, really stepped it up by playing No. 2 singles for the first time this season. Tomorrow, we face a very tough opponent in APU and we know that we have to work really hard to come out on top."
