No. 7 Academy of Art versus Seattle University Final Results
STOCKTON, Calif. – After being narrowly defeated by University of the Pacific on Friday, No. 7 ART U women's tennis looked to balance the scale with a win today against the Redhawks of Seattle University. The Urban Knights did just that in dominant fashion, nearly sweeping their Division I opponent 6-1 to end their exhibition weekend in Stockton.
Academy of Art was unbeatable in doubles on Saturday as they took all three matches in that portion of the contest. In the first position, sophomore
Mariacristina Andrisani and junior
Taisiia Andrieieva grinded out their victory by the score of 7-6 which included a close, 8-6 tiebreaker. In second doubles, the No. 6-ranked duo of juniors
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp made quick work of their opponents, matching Friday's score with a 6-1 victory. Juniors
Paula Alcantara and
Monika Stanikova were equally as strong in the third spot, defeating Hannah Gianan and Kali McCollister by the score of 6-1.
"I think it helped a lot that we won the three doubles matches," said head coach
Clarisse Baca. "It gave us a lot of momentum going into singles."
Heading into singles, ART U needed just three of the six matches to come away with the win. Instead, they won five contests, only faltering in the third position where Andrieieva was just edged in three sets. Stanikova looked strong in first singles, winning in straight sets which included a 7-4 tiebreaker in the second.
With Academy of Art's exhibition season now at an end, ART U will officially begin the year on February 2. They will continue their string of Division I opponents on that day when they take on San Jose State. However, just two days later, the Urban Knights will make their 2018 home debut when they host Stanislaus State on February 4 at 1:00 p.m.
"All the girls played really well today," said Baca. "They really took advantage of their opportunities."
