No. 7 Academy of Art versus University of the Pacific Final Results
Â
STOCKTON, Calif. – The soft opening to the 2018 women's tennis season began on Friday when No. 7 Academy of Art took on Division I, University of the Pacific in an exhibition match. Despite taking the point in the doubles portion of the contest, the Tigers roared from behind to win five singles matches to win by the score of 5-2.
Â
"Today was a great start of the season regardless of the score," said head coach
Clarisse Baca. "It could have gone either way as four matches went into a third set."
Â
As per usual, the Urban Knights shined in doubles. In the first position, sophomore
Mariacristina Andrisani and junior
Taisiia Andrieieva teamed up for a 6-4 win at the top of the lineup. Meanwhile, No. 6-ranked juniors
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp did not skip a beat from their fall season, defeating their DI adversaries 6-1 in second doubles.
Â
Heading into singles, the Urban Knights led 1-0 and needed just three more points to come away with the win. However, out of four matches that reached a third set, three were just edged by UoP. The only Knight to come away victorious was A. Thell-Lenntorp who took the first set 7-6 (7-3) and followed up with another 7-6 (7-4) score in the third.
Â
"Alma did a fantastic job, winning against a five-star, freshman recruit," said Baca. "Overall, the score does not reflect the grind and hard work put into today's match."
Â
The weekend in Stockton continues for Academy of Art on Saturday when they face another DI opponent in Seattle University. First serve will take place at 11:00 a.m.
Â
"We're looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow," said Baca. "We plan to take advantage of the opportunities that we are given."
