No. 11 Knights Sweep Dominican on Senior Day

No. 11 Academy of Art vs. Dominican Final Results

SAN FRANCISCO – After watching from the sideline for the past three years, the day finally came where Annika Schneider was recognized on senior day. Although the clouds threatened to storm, they did not rain on Schneider's celebration down below, allowing No. 11 Academy of Art to sweep Dominican 9-0.

15688The lone senior in 2017, Schneider compiled an impressive amount of accolades throughout her four-year career. Some include: receiving the ITA Scholar Athlete in 2014, the Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2015, and she has been named to the Academic All-PacWest team every season thus far. Furthermore, she was named to the All-PacWest First Team for doubles in 2015 and the All-PacWest Third Team for singles in 2016. Her overall record stands at 37-12 in singles which includes a perfect, 10-0 season in 2015, and at one point, she won 12 matches in a row. Her singles wins are fourth all-time and her highest national ranking was No. 47. She was also the only player to record a singles win when Academy of Art hosted the West Regionals in 2015. In doubles, she is 52-21 with her most winningest season coming in 2014 when she won 18 out of 20 doubles matches. Annika, whose highest ranking was No. 19 with Nina Gajdosikova, is just one win behind Michelle Dandik for the most doubles wins in program history.

In Friday's match, the Urban Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, sweeping doubles in dominant fashion. In all three matches, ART U never surrendered more than three points to their opponent. No. 11 sophomores Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp won their matchup 8-2, while Schneider and sophomore Taisiia Andrieieva followed suit with an 8-2 victory of their own.

Moving into singles, Academy of Art needed only two wins to take home their 14th victory of the season. The Urban Knights received that and much more, sweeping the category to complete the 9-0 victory, their third sweep of the season. In fact, in their two matches against the Penguins this year, ART U has swept both contests, taking 18 points and losing none. The Knights' singles matches were impressive as well, as every contest was won in straight sets and no one surrendered more than two games in a set. A. Thell-Lenntorp took it a step further and never dropped a beat in the fifth-position, taking her match 6-0, 6-0.

Academy of Art will play one more home match before heading to the PacWest Championship on April 19. UC Santa Cruz will pay the Urban Knights a visit to close out the regular season on April 15 with first-serve at noon.
