No. 22 ART U Staves Off PLNU, Stays Perfect

No. 22 Academy of Art vs. No. 24 Point Loma Final Results

SAN FRANCISCO – No. 22 Academy of Art women's tennis put their six-match winning streak on the line Thursday morning when No. 24 Point Loma came to town. Despite a back-and-forth battle, the Urban Knights emerged victorious, edging the Sea Lions by a score of 5-4.

In doubles, the No. 5 duo sophomores Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp met a familiar opponent in the No. 1 position: the twins faced the No. 23 team Nikki Newell and Regina von Koch who they defeated in the semifinals at the ITA Regional Tournament in October. The Thell-Lenntorps took the victory once again, this time by a score of 8-4. Sophomores Monika Stanikova and Paula Alcantara were the other doubles team to earn a win against Point Loma, taking the close match 8-6.

Entering singles up 2-1, the Urban Knights needed just three of the six matches to defeat their adversaries from San Diego. Stanikova made quick work of her No. 25-ranked opponent in the first position, winning the match by a score of 6-2, 6-3. The Knights dropped both second and third singles, but a win from No. 34 K. Thell-Lenntorp in the fourth position put Academy of Art just one win away with two matches still to be finished. Although taking the first set, Alcantara fell behind in the second. The Madrid, Spain native continued to fight hard, but was just edged in the end by a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.

The fate of the match now rested squarely within the hands of No. 48 A. Thell-Lenntorp. Alma found herself behind early after dropping the first set 5-7. However, the Multimedia Communications major quickly turned things around, taking he second set 6-1, and the third 6-2. With Alma's win, the Urban Knights too, were victorious and improved to 7-0 on the season.

ART U will play two more matches this upcoming weekend. Their first will come on the road on Friday at Division I University of the Pacific and the second will be back at home on Sunday against Stanislaus State.
