ART U Dominates in 8-1 Victory over Warriors

No. 22 Academy of Art versus Stanislaus State Final Results

SAN FRANCISCO – After playing matches on Thursday and Friday, No. 22 Academy of Art tennis was back in action on Sunday for their third contest in four days. This time, the Urban Knights squared off with Stanislaus State and defeated the Warriors 8-1 to register their eighth win of the season.

ART U started out strong, posting three wins in doubles to sweep the category. In the first position, No. 5-ranked sophomores Alma Thell-Lenntorp and Klara Thell-Lenntorp took their match by a score of 8-6 and senior Annika Schneider and freshman Mariacristina Andrisani in second doubles took the decision by a score of 8-5. In the third position, sophomores Monika Stanikova and Paula Alcantara only dropped two games in their win and came away with an 8-2 victory.

In singles, the Urban Knights were dominant once again, taking five of six matches. In the fifth and sixth positions, Alcantara and sophomore Taisiia Andrieieva never dropped a game as they each swept their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Both of the Thell-Lenntorps made quick work of their opponents in third and fourth singles as they only surrendered six games combined, and Stanikova came away with a hard-earned, 6-3, 6-2 victory in the first position.

ART U had a chance to come away with a sweep of Stanislaus, but Andrisani was unable to pull through after a battle that lasted multiple hours and was eventually decided in a super tie breaker. The Matera, Italy native led on several occasions in her second doubles match which included taking the first set and holding an early lead in the tiebreaker. The Knights' 8-1 win is their seventh this season in which they have taken six or more points from their opponent and their sixth taking at least seven.

Academy of Art will now prepare for a big trip down to Southern California next weekend where they will face No. 13 UC San Diego and No. 29 Cal State LA on March 17 and 18 respectively. Their trip will also mark the beginning of seven games away from home with their next home match coming on April 4 against Dominican.
