AZUSA, Calif. – Championship defended. Twins
Alma Thell-Lenntorp and
Klara Thell-Lenntorp successfully reclaimed their title as ITA West Regionals doubles champions, adding another accolade to their already-storied young careers. The juniors won five matches over the course of the tournament, never conceding more than four games until the championship when they defeated Warren and Zuidema from Sonoma State 9-7. The twins were crowned
champs in 2016 as well before
placing fifth at the ITA Oracle Cup. The duo will now head to Rome, Georgia where they will compete at the 2017 Oracle Cup October 11-15.
"For this being an out-of-season tournament, the girls were excited to play and came in with the mindset of winning the whole thing," said acting coach and assistant athletic trainer
Kevin Williams. "This is a very tough tournament: to be successful you might need to play and win 3-4 matches in a day, and do so in 95-degree weather."
The Urban Knights enjoyed other successes in doubles throughout the tourney as well, including wins in the first round from ART U's other pair of doubles teams: sophomore
Mariacristina Andrisani and junior
Taisiia Andrieieva, and juniors
Monika Stanikova and
Paula Alcantara.
Academy of Art exercised their dominance in the singles arena as well as with K. Thell-Lenntorp, the No. 7-seed, leading the way with three wins, reaching as far as the semifinals on Saturday morning. Entering regionals, two other Knights were seeded in the top-seven, including: Stanikova (No. 2) and A. Thell-Lenntorp (No. 6). Furthermore, five of the six ART U players won two or more matches.
The Urban Knights will now head home to prepare for their upcoming fall invitational at UC Santa Cruz October 14-15.
"This is a great couple of girls," said Williams. "They do a great job of supporting one another, being disciplined, and staying focused on achieving their goal."
