ART U FINISHES NON-CONFERENCE PLAY, MEETS PACWEST TRIO THEREAFTER
Winners of six consecutive games at the close of 2016, Academy of Art University women's basketball comes off its 16-day hiatus in January with four contests across seven days. Sonoma State represents the Urban Knights' final non-conference matchup prior to pairings with Dixie State, Dominican, and Chaminade.
OPENING TIP
When ART U women's basketball action resumes in 2017, Academy of Art will face Sonoma State not in Rohnert Park, but rather Dominican's Conlan Recreation Center on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. The Knights then host Dixie State on Jan. 5 at City College of San Francisco's
Wellness Center, travel back to Dominican on Jan. 7, and once again play host to Chaminade on Jan. 10. All three of those games are set to tip off 5:30 p.m. Live coverage will be available via the link above. Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights on

KNIGHT WATCH

Still second in the PacWest in steals per game (11.10), Academy of Art is also fourth in turnover margin (2.60). Junior guard
Rodericka Ware ranks fourth in the conference in scoring (17.6 points per game) and fifth in assists (3.9 apg), but both of those numbers have increased during the six-game win streak (19.8 ppg, 4.5 apg). Of her 60 made field goals, nearly half (27) have been from beyond the three-point arc as she is also averaging a PacWest-best 2.7 triples made per game. After the most efficient of her four double-doubles came in 18 minutes
against Cal State Monterey Bay, junior forward
Helena Orts is averaging 11.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in the win streak while shooting over 50 percent from the field. On the year, she ranks sixth in the conference in rebounding (8.8 rpg). Junior guard
Jazzlyn Brewster has at least eight points and two steals in each of her past three games and comes in at sixth in the PacWest with 2.1 steals per contest. Freshman guard
Karleigh Joseph comes off a career day
versus CSUMB in which she posted season-bests of 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
SEAWOLVES ON THE HUNT
After starting the season with four straight wins (three over PacWest teams), Sonoma State came back down to earth with an overtime loss at Menlo and a defeat at the hands of Cal State Los Angeles. Since that time, SSU pulled to an even 2-2 in December with wins over SF State and Cal State Monterey Bay. Conference play continues with pairings against Cal Poly Pomona (Dec. 30) and Cal State East Bay (Dec. 31) prior to the Jan. 3 date with Academy of Art. The Seawolves have outscored their opponents by nearly eight points and a big reason why is Kylie Kiech who averages 15.0 points per game primarily from long range. In two previous meetings, the Seawolves hold a 2-0 advantage on the Knights.
A TOUGH TRAIL THUS FAR

Without a win through its first 11 games, Dixie State fell to Sonoma State by 24, California Baptist by 48, and later Point Loma by 19. The Trailblazers' closest margin came in an 88-82 loss to Notre Dame de Namur. DSU is slated to face Fresno Pacific to start the new year on Jan. 3 before ART U on Jan. 5. Tramina Jordan leads the team offensively at 11.6 points per game while fellow three-point threat Matti Ventling is putting up 10.3 points per contest. The all-time matchup of Dixie State and Academy of Art has the Knights just ahead 7-6.
PURSUING THE PENGUINS
Right in the middle of the PacWest standings heading into 2017, Dominican opened with an 80-67 victory over Chico State, lost three of their next four, but bounced back with three straight wins including a 10-point triumph over Holy Names to start conference play. Losses to BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific followed, but the Penguins once more remained resilient, defeating Chaminade and UH Hilo in Hawaii. Dominican will play NDNU (Jan. 3) and Point Loma (Jan. 5) prior to ART U on Jan. 7. The most recent PacWest Defender of the Week Sandra Ikeora paces Dominican with 19.9 points (second in PacWest), a conference-leading 12.6 rebounds per game, and 1.3 blocks per game. In 15 historical meetings, Academy of Art commands a 14-1 record against the Penguins.
WE CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL
A five-game losing streak opened Chaminade's 2016-17 campaign, but a five-point victory came at UH Hilo to get the Silverswords into the win column. Chaminade then went on to fall in three straight games and will have three more before venturing off the islands for the first time to take on ART U on Jan. 10. Those matchups include former PacWest powerhouse-turned NCAA Division I Grand Canyon (Dec. 31) then Concordia (Jan. 3) and CBU (Jan. 5). The Swords' leading scorer, Lilia Maio (14.0 ppg, 7.4 rpg), finds herself just outside the conference' top 10 scorers (she is 11th) and rebounders (she is 13th). If there is one blemish on ART U's all-time record against Dominican, there is none versus Chaminade as the Knights are a perfect 14-0 when they face the Silverswords.
ART U OVERTAKES OTTERS, WINS SIXTH STRAIGHT
Academy of Art University women's basketball closed out 2016 with a thrilling come-from-behind victory, outlasting Cal State Monterey Bay 72-70 inside Kezar Pavilion on
Dec. 17. Rebounding was key for the Urban Knights who posted 26 second-chance points and a 21-7 run in the second half for their sixth consecutive victory.
LOOKING AHEAD
ART U's first week of action in January will be followed by the first of two trips to Southern California this year where Azusa Pacific (Jan. 14) and California Baptist (Jan. 16) await.
