Box Score 2 TURLOCK, Calif. – On a day that saw a total of three lead changes and two ties, Cal State Stanislaus managed to come away from an evening doubleheader winners 4-3 and 11-6 against Academy of Art University. The Urban Knights took early leads and registered seven hits in both contests yet the Warriors rallied late to pick up wins on their home field.
"Today we did not play to our potential," said head coach
Sonja Garnett. "We did not string hits together like we have been and we made timely mistakes defensively. This team is very talented. We just need to play to our ability, and execute the simple plays."
GAME ONEAfter a relatively quiet first inning, Academy of Art was the first to score in the second with graduate student
Nirana Singh earning a walk, reaching third, then scoring on a steal of home plate. Freshman
Brenna Mitchell (6-3) came right back with a shutdown inning, allowing a triple, but striking out the side.
The ART U lead became 2-0 in the third when senior
Taylor Thurman hit a single to score senior
Kamyle Glover after her two-out double. Academy of Art proceeded to load the bases in the fourth, but could not score and Stanislaus tied things up with a two-run homer off Kailene Begonia's bat.
Singh doubled in Glover in the fifth, however, the advantage was short-lived once again as Jessica Varady drove in one on an infield single then was later part of a double steal that put Stanislaus up 4-3. After 5.0 innings from Varady (4-4), the CSUS starting pitcher, Cheyenne Harper came in for two scoreless frames to earn a save. Despite the loss, Mitchell threw a season-high six strikeouts while allowing four runs on six hits across 6.0 innings.
GAME TWOAfter going up 1-0 in the first, Stanislaus was quickly hit by the ART U offense in the second inning. Sophomore
Jessica West drove senior
Jasmine Dickenson in on a double then scored on a throwing error. The 2-1 margin became 4-1 in the third when West came up with two on and two out, only to double once more and bring both home.
"Nirana and
Jessica West have been doing a great job consistently coming up clutch for us," said Garnett.
The Warriors responded with a three-run third to tie game two and capitalized on an error in the fourth to go up 8-4. Freshman
Samantha Klune followed up a Singh walk with a run-scoring double in the fifth to make it an 8-5 ballgame, but four hits yielded three runs in for Stanislaus in the sixth and, despite a RBI double from Dickenson in the seventh, CSUS would go on to win 11-6.
For the now 8-7 Urban Knights, Glover doubled twice as part of her 2-for-3 game one and West also hit a pair of two-baggers in a 2-for-3 game two that featured a career-high three RBIs. Helping her team-best .425 average, Singh was a combined 2-for-5 with one run batted in, a double, and three runs scored.
Stanislaus improves to 9-11 on the season and was led by Varady's 2-for-5, three-RBI performance. Additionally, Nicolette Vizcaino went 3-for-3 in game two with four runs scored.
ART U will return to PacWest Conference play this weekend when the Knights travel across the bay to Thrasher Park in San Leandro for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader with Holy Names.
