SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Senior
Jenny Johansson continued her undefeated spring Friday with wins in singles and doubles, but Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the No. 5-ranked team in NCAA Division III, took a 6-3 neutral site decision over No. 12 Academy of Art women's tennis at UC Santa Cruz's East Courts.
Â
Johansson moved to 4-0 in singles play with a 6-4, 6-4 win over CMS' Bria Smith. She also teamed with
Michelle Dandik Zaale to win her fourth match at No. 2 doubles, taking an 8-5 decision there.
"It was Jenny and Michelle's first time playing doubles together and they did a great job of coming back from (being down) and executing the game plan," said Academy of Art head coach Nicole Briceño-Garzón. "They rose to the occasion and I am proud of them for it."
Â
But the Athenas (4-0) won their third match this season over NCAA Division II competition with two wins in doubles and four more in singles. Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman topped senior
Nina Gajdosikova and junior
Lucia Zavarcikova at No. 1 doubles 8-5. Gajdosikova got her revenge over Ward at No. 1 singles with a three-set, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 win to improve to 3-1 in singles this spring.
"Nina came out strong for us from the beginning," saidÂ
Briceño-Garzón. "Ward is a good player and I was happy to see Nina stick with her game and take control."Â
The defeat was ART U's first in dual match play this season. Academy of Art was scheduled to play host UC Santa Cruz Friday but instead took on CMS and cancelled its match versus the Banana Slugs due to impending weather. The Urban Knights' next match will be at home on March 9 versus No. 22 Point Loma.
