TRIO OF HAWAIIAN OPPONENTS CLOSE OUT ART U'S REGULAR SEASONRiding the momentum of four consecutive wins which included a dominant effort against Notre Dame de Namur on 'Senior Knight' last week, Academy of Art University Women's Basketball now turns its attention to Hawaii. The Urban Knights are amid their one-week stay on the islands to face UH Hilo, BYU-Hawaii, and Chaminade.
OPENING TIPART U's 2015 Hawaii roadtrip begins Tuesday, Feb. 24 at UH Hilo inside UHH Gymnasium. The Knights will then island hop to Oahu so they may play BYU-Hawaii on Thursday, Feb. 26 inside Cannon Activities Center and Chaminade on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Silverswords' McCabe Gym in Honolulu. All games are set to tip off at 5:00 p.m. HST (7:00 p.m. PST). Live coverage will be available via the links above.
Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights on Twitter & Instagram and "Like" the Urban Knights on Facebook for score updates, videos, and recaps. KNIGHT WATCHThe streak of ART U opponents forcing 17+ turnovers became four consecutive games as the Urban Knights remain on top of the PacWest in turnover margin (5.00) and Top 20 in the country in that category. Academy of Art is also the only team in the conference to average double-digit steals per game (10.28) after their fourth consecutive effort last Friday. ART U is tied with BYU-Hawaii for first in offensive rebounds per game (16.4) and is third in scoring (74.5 points per game).
Junior guard
Zoie Sheng went for a team-high 19 points
against NDNU, upping her scoring average to 14.0 points per game (12th in PacWest). With a 3-for-3 performance at the foul line, Sheng became the program's career leader in free throws made. Junior guard
Jasmin Guinn dropped 17 points versus the Argos and is up to 13.0 points as well as 7.6 rebounds per game. Guinn needs 15 more rebounds to become the new all-time leader. She added a season-high six steals which moves her into a three-way tie for fifth in the PacWest with 1.9 thefts per contest. Junior guard
Regina Camera and senior guard
Molly O'Brien are both averaging 1.8 steals per game and rank eighth and ninth respectively in the conference.
Junior guard
Sha'Nice Storey (12.2 ppg) and remains second to
Alisa Griggs (974) on the all-time scoring list with 918 career points. Camera, who added 17 points of her own against NDNU, comes in averaging 10.6 points per game as well as a team-best 3.0 assists per contest. Junior center
Caron Brown ranks seventh in the PacWest with 1.3 blocks per game.
OF THE VULCAN VARIETYUH Hilo sits in the middle of the PacWest standings with a 7-10 conference record after winning one game in their previous six. The victory, however, came at California Baptist 77-73 and now the Vulcans return home for their final three contests of the year. UHH's hottest stretch came in early January when they won five of seven with three of those coming in the Bay Area. The Vulcans are led by two double-digit scorers in McKenzie Mangino (12.4 ppg) and Hayley Reynolds (10.6 ppg) and that tandem combines for just over 12.0 rebounds per game. In the historical matchup, the Vulcans hold a slight 5-4 edge on ART U.
BYU TOUGH AT HFortunes have drastically changed for the Seasiders since they completed a seven-game win streak with their
72-68 victory over Academy of Art back on Jan. 24. BYU-Hawaii hit a difficult stretch where they had to play both Azusa Pacific and California Baptist twice and wound up losing six consecutive games as a result. BYUH has since righted the ship with wins over UH Hilo and Holy Names in the Seasiders' final homestand (they are 9-4 at the Cannon Activities Center this year). They will finish their 2014-15 regular season with the matchup hosting ART U and are part of the three teams in the mix for the fifth and sixth spots in the PacWest Tournament. BYUH leads the conference in three-point percentage (.353) and a big reason for that is the combination of Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo (16.0 ppg) and Celeste Claw who combined for 32 points against the Knights this season. Academy of Art is up 9-3 all-time against the Seasiders.
POLISHING NEW SILVERAt 7-11 in PacWest play, Chaminade may not be making the conference tournament, but the Silverswords have already set a school record with their seventh victory back on Feb. 21. Following their rough start to the season, Chaminade had won two games then dropped the 80-61 decision to ART U in San Francisco on Jan. 19. Since that time, the Silverswords have gone 4-6 and most recently dominated Holy Names 91-52 on their home floor. Chaminade has Dominican in town on Feb. 26 before finishing their year with the Urban Knights on Feb. 28. The team offers the top three-point defense in the conference and carries four individual double-digit scorers in Lilia Maio (12.5 ppg), Katie Buskey (11.2 ppg), Kristle Henry (10.4 ppg), and Glacen Florita (10.2 ppg). The win earlier this year was the 12th in 12 meetings for Academy of Art over Chaminade.
ART U ROUTES NDNU 79-49 ON SENIOR KNIGHTFeeding off the excitement of a
Feb. 20 pre-game celebration honoring seniors
Sherelle Williams,
Molly O'Brien, and
Madeline Martin, the Urban Knights got ahead of Notre Dame de Namur and never looked back. They finished off a 79-49 victory to secure their place in the Pacific West Conference Championship tournament behind solid performances up and down the roster including a game-high 19 points from Sheng and 17 points apiece from Guinn and Camera.
LOOKING AHEADHaving defeated NDNU last week, Academy of Art secured its place in the PacWest Championship Tournament and now continues into the postseason beginning Mar. 8 in Irvine, California.
