SAN FRANCSICO – In their first home match of 2015, the Academy of Art University Women's Tennis team came out 9-0 winners over Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday afternoon. A thrilling #1 doubles comeback gave way to six singles wins all in straight sets.
In doubles action, ART U had quick completions at #2 and #3 with senior
Jenny Johansson and junior
Lucia Zavarcikova denying a set to their opponents, Analyssa Tallas and Kaitlyn Irlend, in an 8-0 victory. Junior Michelle Dandik and freshman
Dorota Markowska teamed up for an 8-2 win over Ebone Qualls and Jessica Stokes.
At #1, however, senior
Nina Gajdosikova and sophomore
Annika Schneider found themselves down 7-1 to J'Ana Diamond and Jessica Laurie, but they refused to relinquish the final set. Gajdosikova and Schneider pulled off the unthinkable, rattling off eight consecutive set victories to ultimately take the pairing 9-7 on a Gajdosikova overhead slam.
The momentum of that doubles sweep carried into singles action where Gajdosikova defeated Diamond 6-3, 6-3 in the first position, Zavarcikova got ahead of Laurie early and never looked back en route to a 6-0, 6-3 victory, and Dandik allowed just a single set to Tallas 6-1, 6-0. Competing against Stokes, Markowska completed a passionate 6-0, 6-4 win and both Johansson and senior
Kinga Kurczbuch put away their resepective opponents, Quallas and Sarah Cardenas, with 6-0, 6-0 scores. Johansson has not surrendered a set this season through three singles matchups.
Still #14 in the country, Academy of Art rises to 3-0 on the year while #27 Cal State Stanislaus drops to 0-2.
ART U looks ahead to two matches in two days with a road contest at UC Santa Cruz (Feb. 27) and a neutral site pairing with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (Feb. 28) also at UCSC's courts.
