Academy of Art Overcomes Dominican 69-66

Box Score

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Locked in a close battle down the stretch in a Pacific West Conference contest holding major post-season implications, ART U Women's Basketball came from behind to defeat Dominican 69-66 on Monday night. A total of 55 rebounds had the Urban Knights one shy of their season-best and it was junior guard Jasmin Guinn's 19 points that led the way.

"I thought we rebounded well and that was key in a game that couldn't get a lot of transition baskets and easy shots," said head coach LaNay Larson.

Tied four times en route to a 13-13 score early, the game eventually shifted toward Academy of Art after their 7-0 run that featured a pair of layups by junior guard Regina Camera. A 15-5 Knights run was key as senior guard Sherelle Williams hit a corner jumper and soon Guinn went on a roll with five straight points.

Guinn added another triple with under four minutes in the half and ART U led by double-digits at 33-22. Sophomore forward D'Andree Galipeau helped maintain the 11-point margin with a layup in the final minute, but Dominican's Carly Holboke hit a 3-pointer to cut the Knights' halftime lead to 38-30.

After a Molly O'Brien jumper opened the second half, the Penguins proceeded to score 11 unanswered points to come all the way back and take a lead, 41-40, within the first five minutes. Guinn got a basket amid the Dominican surge which ended up being a 17-2 push when all was said and done. Back-to-back layups by junior center Caron Brown and junior guard Zoie Sheng got the Knights back into a rhythm as the teams traded blows.

A pair of jumpers by the Penguins' Sarah Nelson increased Dominican's lead to seven, 63-56, with three minutes and 56 seconds left; making it gut-check time for ART U. Academy of Art came out of the timeout and Brown converted, but then fouled out of the game on the next play down court as the Knights' rebounding chances took a hit.

With 2:30 on the clock, Sheng drained a triple and, when she went for another about 30 seconds later, it was O'Brien who grabbed a critical rebound against Nelson, one of the NCAA's top rebounders, then immediately put the ball in the hoop. The game was far from over, however, as Nelson converted once again on the other end and Camera proceeded to score a basket driving into the lane.

The Dominican lead was one point, 66-65, with 27 seconds left and the ball. Out of the timeout, Camera dove into the passing lane and came up with the steal which soon led to O'Brien being fouled and her making two free throws to give ART U its first advantage in 15 minutes of action. The Penguins still had a chance to finish the game off, but an offensive foul was called and Sheng sealed the victory with two more free throws.

ART U was led by Guinn's 19 points to go with six rebounds and four steals while O'Brien added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Brown grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in 13 minutes and Camera added a season-high eight rebounds with six points as well.

On its 'Senior Night,' Dominican got 21 points, 11 rebounds, and eight blocks from senior Sarah Nelson as well as 13 apiece from Allyssa Weatherd and Carly Holboke.

Academy of Art now looks ahead to its final home game of the year this Friday, Feb. 20 which will be "Senior Knight." Sherelle Williams, Molly O'Brien, and Madeline Martin will be honored prior to their final collegiate home contest with Notre Dame de Namur in town. FAN BUS details HERE!

"Every game is tough and we have a lot on the line," said Larson. "I expect NDNU to come in and give us their best shot. We will spend the next few days preparing for the Argos."
