2015 Sonoma State Fall Invitational Results (Final)ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – On Tuesday, Academy of Art University men's golf crowned a champion.

Following up a
historical start to the 2015 Sonoma State Fall Invitational, sophomore
Oskar Frick became the first Urban Knight to win a three-round tournament outright, finishing 10-under par for a decisive victory.
"This win means a lot to me," said Frick. "It's my first time winning a big tournament and I can't quite put my feelings into words right now. I set a goal to myself before the round to keep pushing and playing aggressive just like yesterday. I knew if I started playing defensive, I would start thinking too much and make mental mistakes. It gives me a lot of confidence because this was the first time I shot under 70 and under-par in a tournament."
Â
Frick picked up right where he left off after day one, shooting a 71 through 18 holes of the Foxtail Golf Club while amassing a tournament-best 15 birdies through three rounds. He ended with a three-round score of 206 (67-68-71). The first place result was the matched the best by an ART U men's golfer ironically since Matt Garcia won the Sonoma State Fall Invitational on
Oct. 21, 2009. However, Garcia's victory included only two rounds, making Frick's result the highest in a full 54-hole competition. The sophomore ended up finishing six strokes ahead of second-place Johnnie Greco of William Jessup.
"As a coach, it's great seeing how far he has come," said head coach
Andy Moren. "Oskar had a gameplan and went out and executed it with confidence and control. Overall, it was a great moment for him and the program. Hopefully it has set higher standards for the team, individuals, and new players coming in."
Coming in as the second Academy of Art finisher was senior
Cody Moore with a 220 (72-72-76), a total of 10 birdies in the tournament, and wound up tied for 15th place. Freshman
Jose Lopez Butron offered a 229 (73-77-79) for a 39th place while sophomore
Daniel Cosgrove was tied for 61st with a 244 (86-79-79).
"I think this will be a huge boost for the team overall because we finished fifth and improved collectively," said Frick.
For the third straight year, Sonoma State earned the team championship with a four-stroke lead on second-place Dominican. ART U made a major leap in the standings down the stretch, placing fifth at the day's end as well as two strokes ahead of a tie between Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego.
"I thought the team finished well," said Moren. "Everybody scored under-par through the final three holes so how they finished really set the tone and allowed us leapfrogged other teams."
Academy of Art looks ahead to one final fall tournament, the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational, on Oct. 19-20 at the Blackhorse Golf Club in Seaside, Calif.
