Stokes, Freshmen Have Big Nights in Defeat

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO — Big nights Thursday from Academy of Art University freshmen guards Jase Harrison, Uchenna Okeneme and junior center Trent Stokes were not enough to hold off the efficient shooting of Hawaii Pacific as the Sharks took down the Urban Knights 76-60 in a Pacific West Conference game at Kezar Pavilion.

Reigning PacWest Freshman of the Week Jase Harrison logged his first career double-double Thursday with 10 points and 10 rebounds while also dishing three assists. Fellow rookie Okeneme led ART U (4-12, 2-8 PacWest) with 12 points. Meanwhile, Stokes tied both the single game and single-season Academy of Art blocked shots records with six rejections on the night to go with six points.

Hawaii Pacific (12-5, 7-4 PacWest) won the game from both the free-throw line and the 3-point arc, shooting 89.7 percent (26-for-29) and 31.6 percent (6-for-19), respectively. The Urban Knights were 9-for-10 from the charity stripe – a 17-point difference – and 3-for-20 from downtown, including 1-for-11 in the second half.

The Knights led by as many as seven (15-8) seven minutes into the first half, but HPU climbed back into it with a 14-2 run, taking a five-point, 22-17 lead. ART U didn't go away quietly though, scoring eight straight points of its own to retake a three-point, 25-22 lead with 6:21 to play before halftime. The 8-0 run included six consecutive fast break points scored by the first-year players Harrison and Okeneme. Harrison also assisted on junior forward Nick Cary's layup that started the run.

HPU answered with a 6-0 spurt to take the lead for good in the game with 4:49 left in the opening stanza. The Sharks had three players score in double figures, led by Justin Long's 15, which included going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line. Luke Hager had 14 points before fouling out with 9:37 left in the game. Josh Morgan chipped in 11.

The Urban Knights pulled to within three points three times in the second half, first coming out of the break to make it 37-34, then again on back-to-back occasions to with under 10 minutes left, but each time the Sharks answered with baskets to expand their lead – the final answer being an 8-0 run to give themselves an 11-point cushion with 5:20 to play.

Stokes tied Rodrigo Maza's record of six blocks in a game from Nov. 17, 2012, versus Cal State East Bay. His six blocks also gave him 31 on the season, tying him with Maza again, who set the ART U single-season record with 31 blocks during the 2012-13 campaign. He is now sixth on the career record list for blocks at Academy of Art with 31 behind Hunter Hayden's (2008-12) 80 turn-aways.

Harrison's previous season high for rebounds was five on two occasions. The double-figure scoring performance was Harrison's third straight in as many starts, helping raise his scoring average by 1.3 points per game during that time.

Academy of Art next hosts No. 21 BYU Hawaii at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Kezar Pavilion.
