Knights Dominate Chaminade In 80-61 Victory

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO – Academy of Art University women's basketball showed its dominance in a Monday night matchup with Chaminade, leading wire to wire en route to an 80-61 victory in Pacific West Conference play. Back at Kezar Pavilion, the Urban Knights jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back, amassing 25 points off 21 Silversword turnovers and adding a season-high 56 rebounds. Junior guard tandem Jasmin Guinn (career-high 22 points) and Zoie Sheng (20 points) led the way in a balanced attack.

11691The game began ominously with junior center Caron Brown finding Guinn for a triple followed by another by junior guard Sha'Nice Storey. Guinn then outlet to Sheng for a transition basket and a bit of déjà vu occurred with Brown setting up Guinn for a long ball once again. Senior guard Molly O'Brien added free throws and soon it was a 15-0 start through the first four minutes.

A jumper combined with free throws to get Chaminade on the scoreboard, but ART U demonstrated its versatility with Guinn, Brown, and Storey each converting offensively. The Knights' lead turned from 18 points eight minutes in to 20+ shortly thereafter as Academy of Art rattled off 12 unanswered points to take a 35-8 advantage on D'Andree Galipeau's layup after two offensive rebounds.

The margin briefly became 30 points, but the Silverswords fought back with a 7-0 push. Sheng continued to connect from beyond the 3-point arc, hitting the second of what would be four 3-pointers made in the game for the junior guard. ART U found itself up 47-24 at the halftime break with already 19 points off turnovers.

A pair of Brown layups followed by her rejections on the defensive end started the second half and soon the lead had turned into 34 points by way of an 8-0 run to open the period. The Knights delivered steady production on both ends of the court and at one point Storey scored seven straight herself. Chaminade breathed its last gasp with an 11-0 run to cut the deficit down to 17 with 3:45 left, however, it was too little too late and the final would be an  80-61 win for ART U.

Improving to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in PacWest play, the Urban Knights had a career-high 22 points from Guinn to go with six rebounds and five assists. Sheng added 20 points with five assists while Brown posted her first double-double in an ART U uniform with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Storey had an impressive all-around performance with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals. O'Brien contributed nine rebounds and seven points as well.

Chaminade drops to 2-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play despite a team-high 17 points and four steals from Kristle Henry. The Silverswords were held to 33.9 percent from the field in the game after a 26 percent mark in the opening half.

ART U moves into the second and third parts of its five-game homestand this Thursday (Hawaii Pacific) and Saturday (BYU-Hawaii). Both contests are set to begin at 5:30 PM inside Kezar Pavilion.
