SAN FRANCISCO — Just in time for the midway turning point of the season, the Academy of Art University men's basketball team returns home for its longest home stand of the season, a five-game Pacific West Conference stretch starting Monday.
Â
The Urban Knights (3-11, 1-7 PacWest) have yet to even reach the middle of their PacWest slate and are only one game past the overall halfway mark of the season, leaving plenty of basketball still to be played. The home stand will feature games against three Hawaii schools and rematches against Dixie State and Point Loma to close out the month of January.
Â
Chaminade (5-7, 2-4 PacWest) visits Kezar Pavilion Monday, Hawaii Pacific comes to The City Thursday and No. 24 BYU Hawaii will be ART U's sixth nationally ranked opponent of the season on Saturday. All games tip off at 7:30 p.m.
Â
Academy of Art is most recently coming off of an 0-3 road trip to Southern California in which it faced the conference's top three teams, all three of which are receiving recognition in the national poll. The Knights will look to snap its seven-game losing streak during the home stand.
Â
ABOUT CHAMINADEThe Silverswords (5-7, 2-4 PacWest) broke out of a three-game slide on Jan. 8 when they topped Fresno Pacific 94-84 at home. Chaminade's game at Notre Dame de Namur Saturday will be its first game away from the islands this season and first game in nine days.
Â
The Silverswords boast the PacWest's third-best scoring offense at 81.3 points per game. In contrast, they also have the conference's worst scoring defense, allowing 83.0 ppg. Chaminade lives on the 3-point line, making 8.8 3-pointers a game this season. It also makes opponents do the same, ranking second in the conference with 3.08 blocks per game. Four players average 12.7 ppg or better for the Silverswords. Kuany Kuany is the team's best rebounder at 7.5 rebounds per game while Lee Bailey dishes 3.8 assists per game – seventh in the PacWest.
Â
All-time Series: Chaminade leads 11-0.
Last Meeting: Jan. 23, 2014, Chaminade won 69-55 in San Francisco.
Â
ABOUT HAWAII PACIFICThe Sharks (10-4, 5-3 PacWest) have also yet to leave the islands this season and will do so for the first time with their trip this week to Northern California. HPU has won seven of its last nine games including back-to-back PacWest victories over Notre Dame de Namur and Fresno Pacific on Jan. 8 and 10, respectively. Hawaii Pacific shared early-season non-conference opponents with ART U, losing to Seattle Pacific 61-49 before defeating Central Washington 74-62.
Â
HPU is opposite of its O'ahu Island counterpart, posting the third-lowest scoring offense in the PacWest at 68.4 ppg but carrying the second-best scoring defense at 63.9 ppg allowed. Luke Hager's 17.5 ppg is fifth in the PacWest, while his 9.4 rpg are second. Justin Long is the conference's best free-throw shooter at 88.9 percent (40-for-45).
