No. 14 APU Extends Streak in Topping ART U

Box Score

AZUSA, Calif. — The Academy of Art University men's basketball team ran into another tough nationally ranked opponent Monday night with a long winning streak. This time it was No. 14 Azusa Pacific winning its 14th straight game with a 87-63 Pacific West Conference victory at the Felix Event Center.

Senior guard Alexis Moore led all scorers and posted the game's only double-double with his second straight 20-point game, scoring 24 and grabbing 10 rebounds. It was Moore's fourth 20-point performance this season and second double-double. The veteran has seven games this season with double-digit points and at least seven boards. He also had a game-high five steals and led Academy of Art (3-10, 1-6 PacWest) with three assists.

No. 14 Azusa Pacific (15-1, 8-0 PacWest) got points from every player that saw time on the floor Monday, led by Troy Leaf's 21. APU's bench outscored ART U's reserves 42-19 and contributed to a 54 percent team shooting performance by the Cougars, including going 13-for-26 (50 percent) from the 3-point arc.

The Cougars pulled away in the first half with a 16-2 run over an 8 minute, 28 seconds stretch in the middle of the period to take a 22-8 lead. ART U went 0-for-9 from the field with two turnovers during 6:42 of that run. Azusa Pacific hit two of its six 3-pointers in the half during the run, finishing 6-for-11 (54.5 percent) from downtown in the first 20 minutes.

Academy of Art fought back though, shutting down APU and pulling within 10 points at 27-17 with 3:39 to play before the break. The Cougars committed four fouls and four turnovers while going 0-for-3 for four minutes while the Urban Knights caught back up. Leaf ended the drought with one of his four 3-pointers on the night to put APU up 30-17 before the Cougars entered halftime with an 11-point 33-22 lead.

Aaron Anderson made his fifth start of the season and notched his first double-digit scoring game with 13 points. He also added two assists. The Urban Knights had 11 steals in the game, forcing 19 Azusa Pacific turnovers, but they were outrebounded 45-28, including 31-15 on the defensive end.

Academy of Art next faces Point Loma at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in San Diego.
