San Francisco, CA -- In their third straight tightly-contested matchup, the Academy of Art University women's tennis team got a big pick me up from their singles players and won their first match away from home in almost a month, taking down Fresno Pacific University 5-4 on Thursday afternoon. The Urban Knights took two of three doubles matches and then once again split singles in half, improving to 14-2 on the year and building momentum heading into the end of the regular season.
The Knights tandem of
Nina Gajdosikova &
Daniela Amelunge Antelo fell in first doubles to #18-ranked Petra Jurova & Angelika Sobiecka 8-4. But in third doubles,
Annika Schneider &
Michelle Dandik Zaale picked up the 8-2 win over Erin Carlson & Matilda Ackered, improving to 14-1 as a pair. Finally, in a tough battle in second doubles,
Lucia Zavarcikova &
Jenny Johansson moved to 13-1 in doubles with a 9-7 win over Alison Carre & Laure-Anne Josso to give ART U a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Just like their last match against Sonoma State, the singles competition would come down to the wire and decide the match. The Knights top three players fell to the FPU counterparts, as Gajdosikova, ranked 50th in singles, dropped first singles to #13 Jurova. In second singles, Carre beat Zavarcikova 6-2, 6-3, and in third singles, Dandik Zaale dropped a three-set match 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to Josso. The Knights showed off their depth, however, as Schneider beat Sobiecka in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in fourth singles. Amelunge Antelo defeated Megan Lee 6-1, 6-1 in fifth singles, and Johansson moved to 15-1 with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) win in the sixth spot to secure the overall victory for Academy of Art.
"It was a great team win," said head coach Beth Daub. "Annika, Dani, and Jenny have once again come up big for us in singles. It was a tough battle and a good win on the road against a good team."
It was the Knights' second win over FPU this season after defeating them back on February 11th. The Urban Knights will face off against Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday to finish off the regular season before the PacWest Conference Championship next weekend.
