San Francisco, CA -- After getting rained out earlier this week, the #14 Academy of Art University women's tennis team came out with the sun on Thursday and took down another top-ranked squad from the West Region, defeating #20 Cal State Los Angeles 6-3 and running their win streak to five straight matches. The Urban Knights took two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches to improve to 11-1 on the year.
"It was a tough fight today," said head coach Beth Daub. "It was anyone's match but at the end of the day the girls got the job done. Second and third doubles showed great teamwork on the court."
After
Daniela Amelunge Antelo &
Nina Gajdosikova fell to Leora Hemmerich & Sydney Postal 8-6 in first doubles, the second and third doubles pairs that Daub was talking about showed why the Knights are 10 games over the .500 mark.
Lucia Zavarcikova &
Jenny Johansson stayed undefeated on the year, moving to 10-0 in 2014 with an 8-3 win over Sonia Landeros & Tiffany Leung.
Michelle Dandik Zaale &
Annika Schneider also won, beating Samantha Sismundo & Sevana Zargarian 8-4 to give ART U a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Zavarcikova finished first in second singles to give the Urban Knights a 3-1 lead, beating Tiffani Shaik 6-0, 6-2, while Dandik Zaale beat Landeros 6-2, 6-2 in the third spot. Johansson in sixth singles also won in quick order, beating Vo 6-0, 6-1, while
Nina Gajdosikova, fresh off being ranked as the #50 singles player in the country on Wednesday, took three sets and came from behind to beat #39 Hemmerich 3-6, 6-2, 10-6. The only losses for ART U came in fourth and fifth singles, as Schneider retired after being behind 6-4, 2-3, and Amelunge Antelo fell 6-3, 6-1.
"Lucy, Michelle, and Jenny were very dominant today in singles," said Daub. "Nina had a tough battle but came back to win it. It was a great win for us. The girls have shown how much they want to reach their team goals."
The Knights will be battling all weekend as they face UH Hilo tomorrow and Dixie State on Saturday, if the weather cooperates. Both matches will be at the SF Tennis Club.
