San Francisco, CA -- It was a perfect day to get outside and play some tennis on Sunday, with not very much wind and more than enough sunshine, and the Academy of Art University took full advantage, romping to a 9-0 win over Dominican University. The Urban Knights had only one match go into a third set as they won their eighth straight against the Penguins and improved to 10-1 on the season.
"Today was a great day of tennis," said head coach Beth Daub. "All of the girls showed up ready to go and their team effort was awesome. They each took care of business."
The Knights did take care of business, starting with the doubles play.
Nina Gajdosikova &
Daniela Amelunge Antelo beat back Irina Morozova & Emily Prescott 8-3 in first doubles, while
Lucia Zavarcikova &
Jenny Johansson stayed undefeated in second doubles, defeating Chloe Vicari & Caitlin Aloia 8-1.
Michelle Dandik Zaale and
Annika Schneider swept away Francesca Katafias & Kelly Zwicker 8-0 to complete the doubles sweep.
The good play spilled over into singles, as the Urban Knights went down the line with wins against Dominican. Gajdosikova rebounded from a first set loss to win the final two and take the first singles match 2-6, 6-2, 10-4. Zavarcikova beat Prescott in a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory in the second slot, while Dandik Zaale beat Aloia 6-0, 6-2 in third singles. Amelunge Antelo beat Vicari 6-0, 6-1, and Johansson contributed another perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over Zwicker in fifth singles.
Kinga Kurczbuch was entered in the sixth singles slot and handled Katafias 6-3, 6-3 to complete the sweep.
"We have a little bit of time to recover and practice before we have an intense week filled with matches," said Daub, "I'm very proud of what the girls have done so far this season."
Since having their six-match winning streak ended, the Urban Knights have started a new impressive streak, winning four in a row. They'll have this upcoming week off but face UH Hilo (March 25), Cal State Los Angeles (March 27), and Dixie State University (March 29) the week after that.
