Softball Team Hawaii 2014
SOFTBALL TRAVELS TO HAWAII FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2012
Seeing their first action since Mar. 5, Academy of Art opens a seven-day, 10-game roadtrip against all four Pacific West Conference Hawaii opponents this Thursday, Mar. 13. Bay Area rain has allowed the Urban Knights to only play two PacWest contests thus far and both were high-scoring matchups with Notre Dame de Namur in mid-February. The last time ART U was in Hawaii was March of 2012.

FIRST PITCH
Academy of Art starts its Hawaii roadtrip on the Big Island of Hilo on Thursday, Mar. 13. The Knights and Vulcans play a doubleheader at UHH Softball Field beginning at 12:00 PM HT (3:00 PM PT). Two days later, ART U starts a four-game series with Hawaii Pacific, going back-to-back in 12:00 PM HT (3:00 PM PT) doubleheaders at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe, HI. The following week, Academy of Art faces Chaminade in a twinbill on Tuesday, Mar. 18 at 4:30 PM HT (6:30 PM PT) with Central Oahu Regional Park the location. The 10-game trip concludes on Thursday, Mar. 20 in Laie, HI with a 1:00 PM HT (4:00 PM PT) against BYU-Hawaii at the Seasiders' Softball Field. Live Stats will be available at the links above. Remember to follow @ARTU_Knights on Twitter & Instagram and "Like" the Urban Knights on Facebook for score updates, videos, and recaps.

KNIGHT WATCH
ART U enters Hawaii with three players batting over .300 led by Taylor Thurman at .364 (12-for-33) with three doubles and seven RBIs. She is one of four players on the squad with three multi-hit games thus far. Elise Oldham is next up, hitting .333 (11-for-33) with the team's only two home runs, two doubles, and five RBIs. Her batting average has risen over 80 points in the last two weeks. Kamyle Glover offers a .323 average (10-for-31) with four extra-base hits and five RBIs. Elyse Cordova started the year by continuing what became a 13-game hitting streak and is now batting .293 along with fellow senior Lauren Stover. That tandem has combined for 10 of the team's 36 RBIs and it is Stover who leads the team with four doubles (three of which have come during her current six-game hitting streak).

In the pitchers' circle, Alexa Peters (0-1) leads the team with a 4.80 ERA in four appearances. Starter Jill Johnson (2-4) is not far behind with a 4.83 ERA with 20 strikeouts through 33.1 innings pitched in six starters. Carlee Emerson (1-4) paces the squad in innings pitched (32.0) through five starts.

MAHALO HILO
After going to the NCAA DII Softball West Regional with a 35-19 overall record after capturing the PacWest Championship, UH Hilo is 12-8 this season. They have won six of their last seven games all at home, sweeping BYU-Hawaii and Holy Names in two-game series, and taking two of three from Notre Dame De Namur in between. They have scored 36 runs and allowed just 16 runs in their past seven games. The Vulcans look to overcome a 1-3 mid-week series in Riverside against California Baptist (Feb. 11-12). Preseason PacWest Player of the Year Rebecca Lee leads Hilo offensively in average (.603), hits (38), home runs (7), RBIs (34), and stolen bases (7). Junior Ashley Nelson guides the Vulcans in the circle with a 7-4 record, 2.71 ERA, and 44 strikeouts. The Knights and Vulcans split a four-game series last season in the Bay Area and are historically an even 6-6 against one another.

WARRIORS SEEING WINS RECENTLY
Hawaii Pacific finished sixth in the PacWest last year with a 30-19 record and they are currently two games under .500 with an 8-10 record. They host Upper Iowa in a two-game series before hosting the Knights in a two double headers. The Sea Warriors have been playing well of late, winning seven of their last eight games including five of their last six at home by sweeping Notre Dame De Namur and Holy Names and splitting a doubleheader with Dominican on Mar. 9, losing the lone game 1-0. Sophomore Sharae Esprecion leads HPU in batting average (.386), RBIs (18), and is tied for a team lead with two home runs. Senior pitcher Chandell Dacosin is 5-2 with a team-best 3.74 ERA. Hawaii Pacific swept the Knights in a pair of games last season in Brisbane to give them the 12-2 advantage in the all-time series.

RAIN KEEPING SWORDS SHEATHED
The Silverswords are 2-2 in their past four games and have a 4-4 overall record following a 25-21, sixth place finish in the PacWest Conference in 2013. Rainouts and exhibition games have kept Chaminade to a small number of NCAA DII games to date. After hosting Upper Iowa and Dominican, they travel to BYU-Hawaii then return home to take on the Knights for a doubleheader on Mar. 18. Junior outfielder Samantha Ford leads the team in average (.542), hits (13), RBIs (5), and is tied for the team-lead with one home run. Junior pitcher Kaitlyn Watanabe leads the squad with two wins and has a 2.37 ERA. The Silverswords took two from the Knights 2-0 last season at Mission Blue Field, but ART U holds an 8-4 lead in the historical matchup.

SEASIDERS STAYING FRESH
The Seasiders are currently 2-12, nearly eclipsing their win total of three from the 2013 season. They swept Holy Names on Mar. 4, 3-1 and 8-2, before losing their next four games. They have two-game series against Dominican, Upper Iowa, Chaminade, and Lubbock Christian before hosting Academy of Art on Mar. 20, the Knights' final two games in Hawaii. The Seasiders are young as freshman outfielder Rebecca Mawson leads BYUH with a .333 average and freshman catcher Makaela Williamson leads the team with four RBIs. Junior pitcher Taylor Alvarez offers a squad-best 2.80 ERA in seven starts. The Knights swept the Seasiders, 6-2 and 8-5, on Apr. 22 in Brisbane last season to put them up 11-5 all-time against BYUH.

KNIGHTS MISS OPPORTUNITIES AT MONTEREY BAY
In a series that was relocated to Cal State Monterey Bay's home field due to wet field conditions at Mission Blue, the Otters managed to take both sides of Wednesday's doubleheader from Academy of Art. After winning game one 6-0, CSUMB saw its early game two lead soon matched, but missed opportunities for ART U resulted in a tough 6-2 defeat in the end.

ON DECK
After Hawaii, the Urban Knights will play a home-road four-game series with Holy Names on Mar. 26 and Mar. 28 then host Notre Dame de Namur on Mar. 29 to close out the month of March.
