Urban Knights Dominant In Win Over Penguins

Box Score

San Rafael, CA -- The Academy of Art University tennis team continued to assert their dominance on Friday afternoon as they rolled Dominican University in straight sets to their fourth straight victory to start the spring season. The Urban Knights won all nine matches and didn't lose a set in singles play to secure the impressive victory.

"We had a great effort across the board today," said head coach Beth Daub. "Each player went out and got the job done."

Starting the day in doubles play, Nina Gadjosikova and Daniela Amelunge Antelo stayed unbeaten on the year, defeating Irina Morozova and Caitlin Aloia 8-3 in the first slot. Jenny Johansson and Lucia Zavarcikova teamed up in second to drop Emily Prescott and Chloe Vicari 8-4, and Michelle Dandik Zaale paired with Annika Schneider upended Kelly Zwicker and Francesca Katafias 8-0 to complete the doubles sweep.

Heading into singles, the Urban Knights got strong performances all around. Gadjosikova beat Morozova 6-4, 6-3 in the first slot, and Zavarcikova took down Aloia 6-1, 6-0 in second singles. Dandik Zaale beat Prescott by dual scores of 6-2, 6-2, and Schneider took a turn in fourth singles to take down Vicari without dropping a game 6-0, 6-0. Johansson moved up to fifth singles and handled Zwicker 6-3, 6-0, and Kinga Kurczbuch came into the sixth singles spot to beat Katafias 6-1, 6-1 for the clean sheet.

"Nina had a fantastic singles match, sticking to her gameplan and finishing strong," said Daub. "Lucia came back ready to go after being sick and came out extremely confident in singles. We had a great match today and now are able to switch our focus to what's next."

Academy of Art will face Sonoma State on Sunday, as the Seawolves are coming off back-to-back sweeps. Sonoma State's women's tennis program joined the PacWest this year even though the rest of their teams are still in the CCAA, and so far the Seawolves have split four matches against PacWest opponents.
