Glendale, AZ – Urban Knights Women's Tennis rose to 2-0 on the year with an 8-1 victory over Chaminade as part of the Paseo Tournament in Arizona. Academy of Art built upon its 2-1 lead following doubles and won all six singles pairings in straight sets against its Pacific West Conference opponent.
"We came out a little slow today, but the ladies still found a way to win," head coach Beth Daub said. "Singles was our strength today. We refocused after doubles and came out ready to go."
In doubles,
Nina Gajdosikova and
Daniela Amelunge Antelo handled Satzy Pulido and Isel Barba 8-0 at number one, but the Silverswords fought back in the second position. Kimberly Takara and Jan Matsumoto bested
Jenny Johansson and
Kinga Kurczbuch 8-6 there though the Urban Knights came away with the advantage after
Annika Schneider and
Michelle Dandik Zaale put away Melanie Schumilas and Roni Hewett 8-2 in number three.
Academy of Art showed its dominance at singles as Gajdosikova and Dandik Zaale trumped Barba and Pulido 6-0, 6-0 at one and two respectively. Schneider only surrendered one game to Schumilas in a 6-1, 6-0 in the third spot while Amelunge outdid Takara 6-4, 6-0 at four. Johansson and Kurczbuch bounced back in singles, defeating Matsumoto 6-0, 6-1 and Hewett 6-1, 6-2 at five and six respectively.
"Tomorrow we are looking to get back on track with doubles and start out with lots of energy," Coach Daub said.
ART U finishes off the Paseo Tournament tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 14, against Western New Mexico at 12:00 PM MT (11:00 AM PST) back at the Paseo Racquet Center.
