#22 APU Extends Streak With Win Over Knights

Box Score
SAN FRANCISCO — Saturday was the second time this season the Academy of Art University men's basketball team faced the No. 22-ranked team in the country, but this time turned out much different than the first.

Backed by two 20-point performances and 41 total points from its bench, No. 22 Azusa Pacific stretched its winning streak to 11 games with a 100-75 Pacific West Conference victory at Kezar Pavilion.

The Urban Knights (3-6, 1-2 PacWest) began the year on Nov. 14 with a 70-67 upset win over then-No. 22 Seattle Pacific on the road. Saturday it was PacWest leader Azusa Pacific (12-1, 5-0 PacWest) who jumped out to a large lead and never looked back.

Troy Leaf – the PacWest's second-leading scorer – led the Cougars with 28 points. He was 5-for-7 from beyond the 3-point arc and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. Jared Zoller scored 22 points off the bench for APU and also had five 3-pointers. Zoller was nearly perfect on the night, shooting 7-for-8 from the field and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.

With the Cougars leading 7-2 early, Leaf and Zoller combined to score the team's next 14 points to put them up 21-15 with 8 1/2 minutes left in the first half. ART U had pulled to within one at 15-14 after trailing by as many as eight just three minutes into the game, and still only trailed by two halfway through the opening stanza.

But Azusa Pacific went on a 22-9 run over the next 9:10 and reached halftime with a 15-point, 42-27 lead. The Cougars' lead never fell below 13 points the rest of the game, and they led by as many as 27 in the second half thanks to a 15-4 run coming out of the break.

Herman Pratt IV scored 20 points for the second time this season to lead Academy of Art. The Urban Knights had three other players score in double figures with Trent Stokes (13), Uchenna Okeneme (12) and Jase Harrison (10). Stokes led ART U with six rebounds, his third game this season and second straight with at least 10 points and six boards.

The Cougars shot 57.7 percent from the field as a team, the highest percentage allowed by the Urban Knights this season. APU's bench outscored ART U's reserves 41-22, thanks mainly to Zoller and LyDell Cardwell, who had 11 points and four rebounds in 16 minutes.

Academy of Art next takes a break for the holiday then returns to PacWest play on New Year's Eve at Dixie State.
