Chaminade Outlasts Knights In Island Finale

Box Score

Honolulu, HI -- In the finale of their Hawaiian road trip, the Academy of Art University men's basketball team kept pace with their Chaminade counterparts for a majority of the game, but as the second half progressed, the Swords heated up from the field and pulled away at the end to halt the Urban Knights in their tracks in an 94-80 loss.

The Knights were able to keep the pressure on the Silverswords in the first half, forcing 16 turnovers and keeping them off balance in an opening period that saw both teams shoot around 40 percent. Chaminade tried to make their living beyond the arc, but ended the half 4-for-12 from three-point land.

ART U battled their way back into the game, as they were at one point down by nine when Lee Bailey made it 29-20. But free-throws got them closer, as Garland Vinson, Alex Carmon, and Alexis Moore all capitalized from the charity stripe. Moore's free throw with 1:48 to go made it a 33-30 game, and then Carmon turned another turnover by the Swords into a layup at the other end to make it a one-point game. But Harrison converted a three-point play to make it 36-32 before Maza put back a rebound as time expired to get to the halftime score of 36-34.

Both teams came out firing in the second half. Alexis Moore made the Knights first three-pointer on the first possession, and each team had already made three triples apiece before the first three minutes had gone by. Academy of Art was keeping pace, but another run by the Silverswords gave them the biggest lead of the game with under 12 minutes to play.

They would extend the margin from there, and though the Knights had their best scoring output in over a month, with four players totaling in double figures, the Swords just stayed one step ahead down the stretch. The closest the Knights got to making it a single-digit contest was with 9:59 to go, when Aaron Anderson made a pair of free-throws to make it 69-58. ART U made a game of it, cutting the lead to 15 with 2:53 to play, but it wasn't enough to get them over the hump. Carmon made a triple to give him a team-high 26 points with 1:34 left, but neither team scored for the final 90 seconds as the final remained 94-80.

Carmon's 26 were accompanied by five assists, while Moore (15pts, 4rebs), Anderson (13pts, 4ast), and Maza (13pts, 7rebs) were also in double figures. Lee Bailey had a game-high 27 points for the Silverswords, who shot over 60 percent in the second half and nearly 70 percent from beyond the arc. The Knights dominated the points in the paint but got out-rebounded 41-21.

ART U comes back to the Bay Area tomorrow and will play their next game in Oakland against Holy Names on Tuesday, January 14th.
