San Diego, CA -- Capping off their busy road trip, the Academy of Art University women's tennis team had two matches in one day slip away during singles play, falling to #19 UC San Diego 5-2 in the morning and then dropping a 6-3 match to PacWest foe Point Loma Nazarene University in the afternoon. The Knights led both matches after doubles play, but their opponents came back during the second part of the match to send ART U home winless on the trip.
The Urban Knights dropped the first doubles match 8-4 against UCSD, but rebounded in the second and third, as
Daniela Amelunge Antelo &
Nina Gajdosikova (8-6) and
Jenny Johansson &
Lucia Zavarcikova (8-5) gave ART U a 2-1 lead. The Tritons would power back during singles, however, as Kyra Scott defeated
Michelle Dandik Zaale in second singles to start the second half. Jacquelyn Davis sent down ART U's
Kinga Kurczbuch in sixth singles, and
Amal Ben El Hadj suffered her first defeat on the season in third singles to give UCSD a 4-2 lead. Tara Vanooteghem defeated
Tamara Kenia to clinch the win for the Tritons, and the Knights agreed to leave the other matches unfinished due to their doubleheader.
Against PLNU, the Knights took the first and third doubles matches to take the lead. Gajdosikova & Amelunge Antelo defeated Maika Adair & Sharon Reibstein 8-6, and Johansson and Zavarcikova won 8-2. But it was singles again that was the downfall, as the Knights only gained one more victory, with Dandik Zaale taking second singles in straight sets. Gajdosikova fell in three sets (2-6, 7-6, 1-6) in the first singles slot, while the rest were straight sets against the Sea Lions.
After running the gauntlet in Southern California, the Knights will stay in San Francisco for a four-game homestand before heading to Hawai'i for their final regular season match and the start of the PacWest Championships on April 18.
