Litchfield, AZ -- It was another solid round for
Alberto "Dago" Esponda as the Academy of Art men's golf team finished up the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational on Tuesday morning. In the final round at the Wigwam Golf Course, Esponda duplicated his second round score of 76 to finish tied for seventh place overall, while the Knights stood fast in their position from the previous day.
Esponda's day gave him a final score of 222, which was only four strokes behind the next highest finisher. Jimmy Kozikowski of Grand Canyon held on to win the individual standings, followed by a four-way tie for second place between Dillon Rust (Central Oklahoma), Ryan Mahoney (Grand Canyon), Kenny You (Dixie State), and Cody Wass (Dixie State). Jay Lim of UCSD finished in sixth, ahead of Esponda and Grand Canyon's pair of Alec Dalhquist and Liam Brace.
The Urban Knights didn't move from their second round place of 15th, but were only three strokes behind William Jessup. Grand Canyon, finishing all of their players in the top ten, won the Invitational, followed by UC San Diego, Central Oklahoma, and Dixie State. There was a tie for fifth place between Western New Mexico and PacWest rival BYU-Hawai'i.
The Academy of Art will be back in action at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational on April 15.
