ART U Falls to PacWest Leaders In Riverside

Riverside, CA -- A week after facing them in San Francisco, the Academy of Art University traveled to take on undefeated California Baptist University in Riverside on Saturday afternoon. But even though they had upset on their minds, the Urban Knights saw the Lancers jump out to an early lead and didn't let up, keeping the Knights at bay en route to a 88-62 win. Alex Carmon had 16 points and Rodrigo Maza had his second double-double in three games in the loss.

The Lancers took the lead early on, going up 7-2 on a three-pointer from Michael Smith. and opening it up to a 7-point lead a couple different times, going up 20-13 on a free throw from Ivan Patterson with under 10 minutes to play. The Urban Knights battled back however, actually taking a pair of leads when Rodrigo Maza completed a three-point play and then later made a pair of free throws to make it 26-25 with 6:22 on the clock in the first half.

But Anthony Cosentino tied the game on a shot from the charity stripe and then capped off  a 9-1 run by California Baptist with a three-pointer  that gave them a 34-27 lead with 4:08 to play. By the time the halftime horn sounded, the Lancers had run their lead to a dozen, leading 44-32 at the break.

CBU kept that momentum going in the second half, opening up the period on a 10-4 run over the first five minutes. The Urban Knights once again started to battle back, cutting the lead to 57-44 with 12 minutes to go, but another burst by the Lancers pushed the lead over 20, and the Knights fell to the conference leaders for the second time in two weeks.

Alex Carmon ended the game as the leading scorer for both sides with 16 points, and Maza's 10-point, 10-rebound game came with another strong performance from the free-throw line, where he made four of five. The Knights out-rebounded and outshot the Lancers from the field, but CBU made 11 three-pointers to keep their distance. Academy of Art will be off for the remainder of the calendar year, and then start 2014 on the road in Hawaii.
