Box Score
Burnaby, British Colombia – Five Urban Knights scored in double figures inside SFU Gym on Wednesday evening, but it was not enough as Simon Fraser outlasted Academy of Art 89-74 in the end. Thanks in large part to
Alisa Griggs' team-high 22 points, ART U cut into an early advantage by the Clan, shortening what had been a 17-point game to four midway through the second half.
Simon Fraser started the game by jumping out to an early 13-5 lead and, after a little more than a minute and a half scoring drought by both teams, continued to maintain that advantage. A 21-8 margin was cut into by
Sha'Nice Storey's layup and another by
Jasmin Guinn, but the SFU lead remained at double digits for the majority of the half.
Griggs was key early as she made her first four shots from the field, however, the Clan held a 41-26 halftime advantage. To start the second period, ART U fought back with a 14-5 run that saw Griggs and Storey delivering consecutive blows until it was 48-40 SFU.
Soon back-to-back layups from
Regina Camera had the Knights within striking distance and it was
Zoie Sheng's jumper that brought Academy of Art to within four, 56-52, with 12 minutes to play. Layups by
Molly O'Brien and Camera kept ART U close, but the Clan responded with a 10-4 push to reassume their double-digit margin and held on the rest of the way to the 89-74 victory.
For Academy of Art (2-4), Griggs led the way with 22 points (7-of-12 FG, 8-of-8 FT) and five rebounds. Among the five ART U players who scored in double figures were Storey and Camera who each had 11 points apiece. O'Brien and Sheng finished with 10 points each.
Rising to 5-1 with the win, Simon Fraser was led by 27 points (10-of-19 FG) from Katie Lowen. She was backed up by last night's leading scorer Erin Chambers who had 25 points and 10 rebounds. Marie-Line Petit added 14 points.
The Urban Knights next begin Pacific West Conference play by hosting Point Loma (Dec. 3) and California Baptist (Dec. 5) at Kezar Pavilion to start the first week of December.
