NATIONAL RANKINGS: DOMINANT DEFENSE
At a difference of 10.06 turnovers per game, Academy of Art University sits atop all of NCAA Division II in turnover margin. Thus far, the Knights have forced 453 turnovers while only committing 280 themselves. ART U also moved up to 3rd overall in the nation in steals per game average (15.3 spg) and is now 8th in scoring average (78.1 ppg), a 13-spot increase after Hawaii. Adding to their top marks, Academy of Art is averaging 17.4 assists per game (13th in NCAA DII), 4.8 blocks per game (25th in NCAA DII), and a 1.05 assist-to-turnover ratio (20th in NCAA DII) which also increased dramatically in Hawaii.
KNIGHT WATCH
Over the two games since returning home, various ART U athletes have offered standout performances including senior
Katy Wade's 15-point, 16-rebound double-double versus UH Hilo which earned her a
PacWest Weekly Fantastic 15 honor. Also cemented in as the program's new single-season blocks leader (42), Wade now ranks 3rd in the PacWest in blocks (2.5 bpg) and 4th in rebounding (9.8 rpg). Most recently, senior
Jordan Rogers, who ranks 7th in the PacWest in scoring (14.1 ppg), posted 20 points versus Hawaii Pacific while freshman
Sha'Nice Storey added 11 points and 17 points respectively in the two games. Storey not long ago set the
new program scoring record with 31 points and eight 3-pointers most recently versus this same Chaminade in Hawaii.
SWORDS NOT SO SHARP
Since falling to the Urban Knights 91-49 back on Jan. 9 in Hawaii, Chaminade has hit a rough patch on the road. At Hawaii Pacific, the Silverswords dropped an 85-71 result then traveled to the mainland where Fresno Pacific defeated them 80-56, Dominican topped CUH 70-54, and Notre Dame de Namur won 63-52 most recently on Jan. 24. The stretch now has Chaminade at 1-13 overall without a road victory thus far. Rhani Kaneaiakala continues to lead the team in scoring (10.6 points per game) and rebounding (5.8 rebounds per game). Dianna Zane, who had the team's lone 20+ point performance this season at HPU, adds 8.4 points per game and leads the squad with 35 assists.
ACADEMY OF ART FALLS ON BACK-TO-BACK BUZZER-BEATERS
Following their three-game sweep in Hawaii, the Urban Knights found themselves in a pair of contests that were decided in the final seconds. Beginning with UH Hilo on
Feb. 19, ART U stormed back from a tough first half and tied things up 57-57 with 46 seconds left. However, after the ball changed hands four times in the final 30 seconds, the Vulcans managed to get a 3-pointer off to beat the buzzer and wound up winning 60-57.
Two days later
against HPU, Academy of Art got ahead quickly and led by 10 after one half, but it became anyone's game down the stretch. Despite being up by one with three seconds to go, the Knights ended up taking a 72-71 loss after a full court pass to a layup.
LOOKING AHEAD
Upon finishing this January homestand, the Urban Knights will head to Southern California for a three-game stint beginning with Point Loma on Jan. 31.
