2012 Cal Baptist Spring Break Invitational Final Results
Primm, NV -- ART U men's golf shaved 28 strokes off of their first round score at the Cal Baptist Spring Break Invite and made a legitimate run at the top two spots of the tournament before settling for fourth place in their highest finish of the 2012 campaign. Their second round score of 284 marked a historic program low and a huge accomplishment for the team and the coaching staff.
"We blew all of our season goals out of the water today," said head coach Cheryl Lala. "This is a huge milestone for us to not only reach our goals, but to exceed them. They should all be extremely proud to be a part of this outstanding performance."
The Knights have been shooting to get under 300 as a team all season, and were well under that on Tuesday, going for a season-low 284 as a team, which tied for the best score in the second round. Every member of the Urban Knights squad cut at least five strokes off their day one score, which was cut short due to winds over 55 MPH on the golf course.
Stuart Favretto shot the second-lowest round of the day with a 68 to finish tied for third place overall.
Alberto "Dago" Esponda finished tied for 8th place with a 147 (76, 71),
Sean Etow (80, 72) and
Cody Moore (79, 73) both finished in 20th place with 152, and
Thomas Krepp cut seven strokes off his score to finish with a 163.
"They've all been working so hard out there every day," said Lala. "Today I know they caught the eye of a lot of people out there, and showed themselves what they know that they're capable of."
Dixie State and Texas A&M-Commerce flip-flopped first and second place, with the Red Storm also shooting 284 to come away with a final score of 584 and a victory over the Lions (593). Cal Lutheran (595) snuck right in before Cal Baptist and Academy of Art (596) to round out the first five teams. Marcus Sanna of Texas A&M-Commerce jumped from 8th place to first place overall, shooting a tournament-best 67 to finish at 142. Josh Friere (Johnson & Wales, FLA) finished second, only a stroke ahead of Favretto and Nick Drost (Dixie State).
