Ojai, CA -- After making it to the round of sixteen in both singles and doubles, the Academy of Art women's tennis season came to an end on Friday, as the three Urban Knights in the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament fell to their opponents.
Amal Ben El Hadj and
Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa both fell to their singles opponents, and Phukchampa and
Jenny Johansson's quest for a doubles title also came to an end on Friday afternoon.
Ben El Hadj had defeated her first round opponent Adrienne Hamada (Whittier) and her second round opponent Jasmin Zaragoza (Hope University) before faltering against Verena Preikschas in the round of sixteen. The Urban Knights saw Preikschas twice earlier this year in matches against Cal State Stanislaus, and she remained undefeated against ART U this year with the 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Phukchampa had won her first two matches, bringing down Maddie Morton of the University of the Redlands in the opening round, and then defeating Caroline Brigham in the second round. But Phukchampa fell to Bettina Radke (Concordia) by dual scores of 6-2, 6-2 in the round of sixteen. It was an improvement over her performance last year, when she was upset in the first round, and finished her ART U career on a high note with her late ousting in the Tournament.
In doubles play, Phukchampa and Johansson won their opening round on Thursday, defeating Carly Mouzes and Lauren Toohey from California Lutheran University 6-2, 6-2. But in the round of sixteen, they fell in a hard-fought battle to Jamie Solomon and Kara Wang from Pomona Pitzer 7-6, 6-2.
Phukchampa ends her 2012 campaign with a 10-12 record in singles, and 22-16 in her career, and a 24-15 career record in doubles play. Ben El Hadj will go into her senior season with a 26-10 singles record, coming off a 12-8 year. Johansson lost her singles match but ends her year with a record 16 wins in 2012.
