MATCH #20
ART U (11-8) vs. #1 BYU-Hawaii (21-0)
April 17, 2012 at 1:00 PM
San Francisco, CA -- San Francisco Tennis Club
OPENING SERVE
The Urban Knights won last week's matches in convincing fashion, taking 9-0 sweeps of Notre Dame de Namur and Mills College en route to their total dominance of the Bay Area tennis scene. Freshman
Jenny Johansson extended her personal singles streak to 10 straight sets with a 6-0, 6-0 victory, winning nine of her last 10 matches and improving to 14-5 overall on the season. Johansson also teamed up with senior
Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa to win their last three doubles matches dating back to the matchup with Sonoma State.
ALL SIGNS POINT WEST
After defeating teams from the North Bay (Dominican), the South Bay (Notre Dame de Namur), and the East Bay (Mills), the only direction left for the Knights to go is west. At first look, that points them straight into the Pacific Ocean, but if they keep on going, it leads to their final regular season opponent in BYU-Hawaii, who will travel to San Francisco before the PacWest Championships later this week.
ON TOP OF IT ALL
The BYU-Hawaii Seasiders find themselves back on top of the Pacific West Conference and now are ranked #1 in the country, compiling an impressive 21-0 record to lead them to the top of the Division II tennis world. Their team boasts the #1-ranked singles player in Annie Hwang, who is joined by two other Seasiders (#6 Sherry Liu and #8 Yuan Jia) in the top ten in the country. They also have the top doubles team (Hwang and Liu) and the #9 doubles team in D-II in Jia and Marietta Tuionetoa.
COACH'S CORNER
"We have long watched BYU-Hawaii's success", said Urban Knights head coach Peach. "The girls of BYU-Hawaii are extremely well coached, really solid in every phase of the game of tennis. The team has had an unbelieveable record in Division II tennis. The only matches they have lost in the last few years are duals at the national Division II national tournament. I want our girls to study how disciplined their team is, and how they react to stress on the court. We have much to learn from them!"
ON THE DOCKET
The Knights will head over the Golden Gate Bridge to Dominican for the PacWest Championships starting on Thursday.
