Moraga, CA – Behind 32 hits and 23 runs scored Saturday, the Urban Knights trumped Dominican 13-1 in five innings of game one and 10-2 through six innings of the second contest. Academy of Art University began the day by setting the new program record with an eight-run opening inning and rolled with another impressive start by junior
Kimberly Dauer. In game two, freshman
Kamyle Glover picked up her first career victory with no earned runs allowed on three hits as ART U again provided the offense, scoring in five of six innings at Cottrell Field on the campus of Saint Mary's.
“We talked about scoring each inning because [Dominican] is a team that will not give up, so the early lead helped us relax and then the girls did a good job with putting pressure on them all game,” head coach Rachel Sherman said.
The first contest started off with a bang as a walk and two singles set the table for senior infielder
Genna Allen who launched one deep to left center for the first grand slam of her career. Academy of Art (18-23, 12-12 PacWest) would not stop there, however, because the bases soon became loaded again after another walk and two more singles. Junior infielder
Jayme Stewart doubled home two on another ball to left center and, with six runs in, there was still just one out. Dominican (3-36, 0-21 PacWest) opted to change its starting pitcher at that point, but two more would come in on an RBI single by senior outfielder
Ashley Lokey and an RBI bunt single by freshman
Haily MacDonald.
Dauer (11-9) rolled through a scoreless first to quickly put her squad back in the batter's box. The Knights' offense continued to flow with a leadoff single by Allen and two more walks, loading the bases once more. Lokey would get an RBI single in before a big two-run double by sophomore infielder
Lauren Stover.
Down 11-0, Dominican came back to score its only run of the game in the second on an RBI single following two errors. The teams would exchange a scoreless third before ART U added two more in the fourth by way of a Stover sacrifice fly to score Lokey after a one-out triple and then an RBI single by freshman infielder
Taylor Thurman with the bases loaded. It was a total of 17 hits for Academy of Art in the opener, tying the season-high.
Dauer would finish off her 15th complete game of the year by allowing just two hits in her final three innings and never letting a Penguin reach second base in that time.
“Kim threw another great game and worked on some things to help her next weekend. I thought she did really well,” Coach Sherman said.
Game two started with a quick scoreless first inning as Glover (1-2) would retire six of the first seven DUC batters she faced. Academy of Art gave its freshman starting pitcher a 3-0 lead in the second when an RBI double by sophomore outfielder
Elyse Cordova brought in Thurman and Lokey then hit a two-run single.
The Penguins responded by scoring a run on an error, two hits, and a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 contest. However, ART U went back up by three after Allen doubled, stole third, then came in on a sacrifice fly by Thurman. Two Knight errors resulted in another run for Dominican in the fourth, but Academy of Art created a sizable distance with a four-run rally in the bottom of the inning. Stover smashed another two-run double to start the surge which also featured RBI singles from junior outfielder
Julie Martin and Thurman.
Like Dauer, Glover kept DUC quiet in the final two innings, retiring six in a row to finish off the game and collect her first win in the 10-2 final.
“I'm very proud of Kamyle for getting her first complete game and her first win!" Coach Sherman said. "I thought she threw great, was able to keep them off balance, and trusted her defense.”
The combined end result in the circle for Academy of Art was 11.0 innings pitched and no earned runs allowed. Dauer allowed a single unearned run on four hits while striking out three in her 5.0 innings of game one. Glover went 6.0 innings while surrendering two unearned runs on just three hits. Dauer and Glover each walked just one apiece.
On a day highlighted by 10 multi-hit performances for the Urban Knights, Allen and Stover each had a huge doubleheader. Allen combined to go 5-for-8 with the grand slam, two doubles, five RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Stover contributed a 4-for-7 day that included two doubles, five RBIs, and two runs scored. Lokey produced tremendous value in both games, finishing 5-for-7 with a triple, a double, four RBIs, and four runs scored.
Some of the top game ones featured MacDonald's 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and two runs scored and a pair of RBIs for Stewart. Cordova was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in game two, going 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, an RBI, two runs scored, and a steal. Martin also went 2-for-4 in that one, driving in one while scoring twice and Thurman added a 1-for-2 game two with two RBIs.
“Everyone did a great job at the plate,” Coach Sherman said. “We made good adjustments, swung at good pitches, and everyone saw success.”
The Penguins had RBIs from Samantha Talavera and Kellie Hislop while Kayleigh Klingberg went 3-for-4 on the day. In game one, Karly Harris (2-14) was assigned the loss after allowing eight runs in one-third of an inning. Harris would come back to pitch a complete game two, but she again took a loss with 10 runs allowed on 15 hits through 5.0 innings pitched.
ART U continues its four-game road/home series with Dominican tomorrow at Mission Blue Field. The teams will participate in the
