Four Urban Knights Named to 2011 All PacWest Team

The 2011 Softball All PacWest Team was announced on Wednesday morning, and with it came good news for the Academy of Art University. After a very successful season where the Urban Knights finished with a 29-20 overall record, the team is getting some much deserved recognition from their conference. The Knights had four players named to the All PacWest Second Team, an improvement from years past. The players to receive the honors were senior Alana Aweau, junior Sierrah Garcia, sophomore Jayme Stewart, and freshman Elyse Cordova.

Aweau (Fairfield, CA) was recognized for her play both at first base and the designated player position. She received two Second Team Honors, one for both positions. This was the first year the senior was named to the All PacWest team. Alana concluded the 2011 season with a .381 average (second on the team) including  56 hits, 35 runs scored, seven doubles, seven homeruns, 28 RBI, 84 total bases, 25 walks, a .571 slugging percentage, a .480 on base mark, and a .955 fielding percentage.

Garcia (Loa Banos, CA) was honored for her play as a pitcher. This is the second year that Garcia has made the All PacWest Team after being named to the Second Team in 2010. This season, Sierrah finished with a 2.83 earned run average, and a 13-11 record. She had 19 starts and made 36 appearances on the mound, throwing 12 complete games, and recording one save. Sierrah led the conference with 141 strikeouts in 149.1 innings pitched.

Stewart (Shingle Springs, CA) was named to the team for her accomplishments as a catcher. This is her first year being named to the All PacWest Team. Jayme was a powerhouse offensively for the Knights this season as she finished with a .345 batting average including 48 hits, 23 runs, 13 doubles, eight homeruns, 40 RBI, and 85 total bases. Jayme also posted a .612 slugging rate, a .429 on base mark, and an impressive .984 fielding percentage.

Cordova (Tulare, CA) received the honor after her first season with the Urban Knights. The freshman was voted to the team for her play as an outfielder. Elyse led the team with a .393 average and started in all 49 games for the Knights. She finished with 66 hits, 40 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, two homeruns, 22 RBI, 82 total bases, and 19 stolen bases. Elyse also posted a .488 slugging rate, a .421 on base mark, and a .967 fielding percentage.

The All PacWest Team is decided on by nominations and votes by all nine Pacific West Conference team Head Coaches.
