Freshman Elyse Cordova Named to All Region Team

2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II All Region Team

Academy of Art University's softball team received a tremendous honor as freshman Elyse Cordova was named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger All West Region Second Team. The announcement came Thursday morning from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in Starkville, Miss. The All Region Team is decided on by Coaches nominating thier own players, then the NFCA committe voting on the top players in each region based on season statistics.

"To me this honor means that all of my hard work paid off, and helps me trust myslef as a player," exclaimed Elyse Cordova. "It makes me very excited to grow even more, and continue to help my team in any way that I can."

Cordova (Tulare, CA) was recognized for her outstanding play in the outfield. Elyse played and started in all 49 games for the Urban Knights this season. At the conclusion of the season, Cordova led the team with a .393 average including 66 hits, 40 runs, and 19 stolen bases. She also finished with two homeruns, 22 RBI, 82 total bases, a .421 on base mark, and posted the third highest fielding percentage with a .967.

"Elyse had a great freshman year," commented Head Coach Rachel Sherman. "She was a constant threat in the lineup and on the bases. I am so happy for Elyse to get recognized by the coaches in the West. She has worked very hard and has grown so much in a year. Elyse has such a bright future and this is just a glimpse of future accolades for her career."

Elyse received the honor for the West Region, which is one of the most challenging regions in all of Division II.
