Laie, HI - On day two of the Pacific West Championships the Academy of Art University's tennis team faced Dominican University on Friday afternoon. The Knights looked more like their usual selves as they bounced back from a tough defeat the day before. ART U came out attacking and went right to work on the Penguins. Everyone was in full swing during the day, and at the end of the match, ART U came away with a big victory over Dominican winning with a final score of 5-0.
The Urban Knights got off to a very strong start in the match. Doubles play was first and the Knights showed no weaknesses through three matches. The first doubles team of Kunkanda Phukchampa and Laone Botshoma got things going for ART U. They defeated their Dominican challengers with a score of 8-3. They were followed by Amal Ben El Hadj and and Diane Phan who teamed up and came out victorious winning 8-2. The third and final doubles competition was played by the duo of Paola Corra Fe and Courtney DeWalt. They were a force not to be reckoned with and won their match 8-2.
The women kept things rolling into singles play. Phukchampa was up first for the Knights competing in the No. 1 singles spot. She came out extremely strong and defeated her opponent with scores of 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 2 spot was Botshoma who quickly defeated her challenger in two sets winning 6-1, 6-0. After the conclusion of that singles match, the entire match was called because ART U had reached five wins. The four other singles matches were not played since ART U was so successful early on in the match.
This win shows how resilient the Urban Knights team is, and how strong they are going forward. After the win today, the Knights are now 1-1 in the PacWest Championships. The team will play Hawaii-Hilo for 5th place tomorrow, April 16th in Laie, HI at 2:00 PM HST.
