HOMECOMING GAME SET FOR THIS THURSDAY
With Notre Dame de Namur in town, the Academy of Art University men's basketball team will play its final contest of the 2010-11 season at home this Thursday. Homecoming 2011 is shaping up to be an exciting night as these two teams continued their history of late-game drama with a decision in the final seconds earlier this season.
OPENING TIP
ART U welcomes NDNU to Kezar Pavilion for the final game of 2011 on Thursday, Mar. 3. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM following the women's contest. All home games will carry Live Stats, Live Audio, and live score updates will also appear on the Academy of Art University Athletics Twitter.
KNIGHT WATCH
Still entrenched as the fourth and fifth scorers in the Pacific West Conference, freshman forward William Overton, Jr. and junior forward Keith Davis have made their presence known this season. Overton, Jr. averages 17.4 points per game while Davis is right behind him at 16.4 points per contest. Davis earned his ninth PacWest Weekly Top 10 selection last week for a 25-point performance against Dominican which tied his season-high. At 3.7 blocks per game as a team, the Urban Knights rank second in the conference and are led by 25 rejections from freshman center Noah Koné-Nelson.
SCOUTING THE ARGONAUTS
Facing all of the same opponents as ART U over the last three weeks, Notre Dame de Namur has not been able to achieve a victory. The Argos fell to Grand Canyon 63-58 and Dixie State 85-69 on last week's roadtrip. In the last five games, arguably no Argonaut has played better than forward Tyler Fricke. Since his 19-point, 14-rebound performance against the Knights on Feb. 7, Fricke has scored team-highs in three of four games and leads the team with 14.4 points per game in PacWest contests only. Guard Arron Mollet averages the most points per contest on the team overall (13.0) and paces NDNU with 34 triples made.
KNIGHTS DROP 73-65 HEARTBREAKER TO DOMINICAN
Sparked by two runs in the opening period, Academy of Art established a first half advantage over the Penguins last Friday, but DUC came back late to earn the victory. Davis scored 25 points for the Knights in one of the team's best nights shooting from the free throw line.
Behind Dominican 8-2 early, ART U initiated a 9-2 response with Davis converting from the foul line. Overton, Jr. and senior guard Phillip Samuel would then knock down several free throws to help Academy of Art gain a 10-point lead shortly before the halftime break.
More hard work on both ends had the Knights holding their double-digit advantage early in the second period, but the Penguins continued to chip away. After retaking the lead, 63-62, with three minutes left, Dominican would not let go and managed to come away with a 73-65 win in the end.
