Women's Tennis Delivers Big Win Against Sierra College

Box Score

San Francisco, CA –
The Academy of Art University's women's tennis team hosted Sierra College in an exhibition match on Friday afternoon. Despite the rainy weather, the team still managed to get in an entire match at the San Francisco Tennis Club. The Urban Knights continued their hot streak, and came out ready to play in today's match. All of the Knights' players contributed in the win, and ART U came away with a complete sweep, winning with a score of 9-0.

"The girls have been executing and we've really shown our depth these last few matches," Head Coach Dave Allen reflected. "In our first couple years, I think the depth was questionable so it's great to have some options now. I feel comfortable playing any of our players in any position. Though there are clear strengths on this team, we are really starting to develop a sense of team."

The Wolverines were no match for the powerful Urban Knights team. ART U took control of the match during singles play, and never looked back. In fact, all six singles matches were each determined in two sets. Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa led things off for her team by defeating her Sierra opponent 6-0, 6-0. Laone "Lala" Botshoma was in the No.2 spot and easily won her sets 6-1, 6-1. Continuing right along, Amal Ben El Hadj defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-0, and Diane Phan stepped up in the No. 4 spot winning her match 6-0, 6-0. Rounding out singles play, Maria "Belen" Tenorio came out victorious over her competitor winning 6-0, 6-0, and in the No. 6 spot, Paola Correa Fe came up with the final win with scores of 6-2, 4-0.

Doubles play wasn't much different for the Urban Knights. They kept up their strong play, even as Coach Dave Allen switched up the doubles teams a little bit. The new duo of Bothsoma and Phukchampa proved successful as they easily defeated their challengers 8-0. Ben El Hadj and Phan teamed up for doubles, and came away with a win on the day, taking the match with a score of 8-1. The final match of the game was up to the combination of Correa Fe and Cecilia Hedin, and they were victorious in their doubles match, winning 8-1; which secured the sweep for ART U.

After four hours of tennis, the Knights came away with one more match of experience as they head into a PacWest conference match tomorrow, February 19th. ART U is set to take on Notre Dame de Namur University at Canada Tennis Club in Blemont, CA.
