ART U MATCHES UP WITH PENGUINS, ARGOS NEXT

Heading into the final game of its first 2011 homestand, Urban Knight men's basketball comes off a week of dramatic finishes. For the second consecutive occasion, Academy of Art defeated Hawaii-Hilo on a final shot by junior forward Keith Davis then just could not hold on against Hawaii Pacific. This week, the Knights play host to Dominican and face Notre Dame de Namur on the road this Monday, February 7th.

OPENING TIP
The final installment of ART U's PacWest homestand concludes Thursday, February 3rd with Dominican in town at Kezar Pavilion. Then, on Monday the 7th, Academy of Art makes a local trip to Notre Dame de Namur's Walter Gleason Gym. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM following the women's games. All home games will carry Live Stats, Live Audio, and live score updates will also appear on the Academy of Art University Athletics Twitter.

KNIGHT WATCH
Freshman forward William Overton, Jr. moved back into second place among PacWest scorers this past week and also garnered a Weekly Top 10 honor. He scored game-highs in both of the Knights' contests (18 vs. UHH, 26 vs. HPU) and averaged 4.5 rebounds for the week. Complementing Overton, Jr., Davis remains the fourth highest scorer in the PacWest (16.2 points per game). Defensively, freshman center Noah Koné-Nelson has quietly become the fourth best shot-blocker in the PacWest, averaging 1.1 blocks per game. He has nine blocks since ART U began its homestand four games ago.

SCOUTING THE PENGUINS
After losing its top scorer and 2009-10 PacWest Freshman of the Year, Austin Bryan, to injury, Dominican has endured a tough year. The Penguins started with 16 consecutive losses before a 79-73 victory over Hawaii-Hilo on January 27th, just two days after ART U had defeated the Vulcans. Most recently, Dominican fell to Hawaii Pacific 74-70 in the final game of DUC's first homestand in PacWest play. Offensively, the Penguins are led by guard Adam Chavis who averages 12.6 points per game. However, for all of Chavis' efforts, center Killian Larson has led the team in scoring in five of its eight conference games. Since PacWest play began, Larson (16.4 points per game) has been the fifth leading scorer across the conference. DUC also ranks second in the PacWest in steals per game (7.2).

SCOUTING THE ARGONAUTS
Notre Dame de Namur opened up its season with five losses (one against Division I UC Davis, whom ART U defeated in an exhibition contest) before topping William Jessup 73-67 on December 8th. Like Academy of Art, the Argos started PacWest play with four games in Hawaii, highlighted by a 90-88 double overtime loss to Hawaii-Hilo (Jan. 4) and a 61-59 victory over Hawaii Pacific (Jan. 10). During NDNU's recent homestand, the Argos sustained four more defeats despite numerous strong scoring efforts from guard Arron Mollet. Mollet has posted team-highs in points in over half of the Argos' games, averaging 14.3 points per contest for the season. NDNU is scheduled to play Dominican on February 5th prior its matchup with the Knights.

HPU TOPS ART U 68-64 IN FIERCE BATTLE, KNIGHTS 1-1 FOR WEEK
Academy of Art University split its pair of games last week, including a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Hawaii-Hilo on January 25th, and a hard-fought loss to Hawaii Pacific on January 27th. Against the Vulcans, the Urban Knights used a 21-3 second half burst to take the lead after trailing at halftime. Overton, Jr. had 11 points during the push that finished with ART U ahead by double digits. Though UHH battled back to tie late, Davis delivered a final blow in the waning moments for his second consecutive game-winner.

Two days after the victory, Academy of Art started its game versus Hawaii Pacific on fire. After jumping out to a 19-0 lead to begin the game with relentless defense, ART U was ahead by four points at halftime due to a 15-2 comeback from HPU. In the second half, the teams fought through numerous ties before a brief 5-0 burst by the Sea Warriors ended up being the difference. Overton, Jr. led the Knights with a game-high 26 points while Davis chipped in 15 points.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Urban Knights will make one final out-of-state roadtrip following Monday's matchup with NDNU. Academy of Art travels first to Phoenix, AZ for a rematch with Grand Canyon on February 10th, and follows with its second game against Dixie State in St. George, UT on February 12th.
