Men’s Basketball Drops 79-62 Decision To Seasiders

Box Score

Laie, HI – Monday night inside the Cannon Activities Center, the ART U men's basketball team took a tough 79-62 loss to BYU-Hawaii in a Pacific West Conference contest. The Urban Knights stayed right with the Seasiders early on and out-rebounded the Seasiders 40-34, but BYU-H used a run to end the first half to get ahead and eventually held on for the victory. Junior forward Keith Davis finished with a team-high 18 points.

BYU-Hawaii assumed a lead briefly to begin the game before Davis and junior center Hunter Hayden both knocked down jumpers off passes from freshman guard Czar Robotham. Much like the Knights' contest against Chaminade two days prior, Davis was again an early offensive spark with six of ART U's first eight points.

With 10 minutes to go in the first half, senior guard Devin Williams executed a steal and promptly found Davis for a jumper to tie the game at 16-16. From there, however, the Seasiders initiated a 21-4 burst to create separation for their 37-20 halftime advantage.

Active play helped Hayden grab an offensive rebound and tip the ball in for the first ART U points of the second period. The Seasider lead was soon reduced to 11 on a triple by Davis and a jumper from freshman forward William Overton, Jr. But BYU-H guard Tsung-Hsien “Jet” Chang, the second highest scorer in the PacWest behind Overton, Jr., started to catch fire and BYU-Hawaii responded by pushing its advantage up to 20 points, 51-31, midway through the second half.

The Seasider lead hovered around that margin for the rest of the game, dropping to 18 at one point after Davis scored five consecutive points for the Urban Knights. Late in the contest, ART U brought it down to 15 points, but BYU-H would prevail, taking a 79-62 victory in the end.

Ten different Knights scored in the contest led by Davis' 18 points along with three rebounds and two assists. Overton, Jr. added eight points and four rebounds while Hayden contributed eight points of his own with a game-high 10 rebounds. Samuel posted seven points off the bench and freshman center Noah Koné-Nelson had six points. Williams did a little bit of everything with four points, six rebounds, and four assists. Academy of Art University is now 3-10 overall, 0-3 in PacWest Conference play.

Chang paced BYU-H with a game-high 26 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. In support of Chang, guard Jake Dastrup recorded 17 points. BYU-Hawaii moves to 7-4 overall, 2-0 in PacWest action.

The Urban Knights' four-game Hawaii roadtrip concludes on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at Hawaii Pacific. ART U and HPU are scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM HST (9:30 PM PST) following the women's game.
