San Francisco, CA – The women's tennis team played their last originally scheduled home game of the season on Wednesday morning when they took on PacWest conference members Notre Dame de Namur. The Urban Knights came out strong, as this was their first match in over a week. AAU showed their true power as they swept the entire match from the Argos. After flawless play, the Academy of Art University women defeated the Argos with a final score of 9-0.
The Urban Knights got things going first in the singles matches. After switching up the order slightly, the women seemed to be unbeatable to their opponents. Diane Phan set the tone for the Knights as she defeated her Argos opponent with scores of 6-0, 6-3, followed by Laone "Lala" Botshoma winning her match 6-0, 6-1. The Knights continued their competitive play by Paola Correa Fe coming out victorious in her singles game with scores of 6-1, 6-1. Anna Ritchie came out on top over her Argos competitor 6-0, 6-0, Cecilia Hedin also won over her opponent 6-1, 6-1, and Maria "Belen" Tenorio rounded out the singles matches by retiring her Argos match-up.
AAU also switched things up for doubles play, changing the powerful combination of Phan/Botshoma, and found promising results in doing so. All of the Urban Knights' new doubles teams defeated their Argos opponents. Phan and Correa Fe teamed up and won 8-2, Hedin and Ritchie came together and won 8-2, and Botshoma and Tenorio combined to retire their competitors and finish the shut out.
“I was very happy with our doubles play,” Head Coach Dave Allen said. “In changing our doubles partners, it allowed us to have a fresh perspective on each match. I felt like the girls executed our game plan very well.”
After the sweep, the Academy of Art University's record improves to 6-12 overall, while Notre Dame de Namur University's record falls to 1-12 overall. The Knights are set to head to Glendale, AZ where they will compete in the PacWest Championships starting on April 15th.
“The girls are learning from every match,” Coach Allen said. “They're getting better with each match and that's what I like to see at this point in the season. We continue to learn and we are still in strong contention in our conference. This definitely gives us momentum going into the tournament.”
